to assist them what they want to know and what they need to learn , the instruction can use the feedback from student to better in teaching.

This topic has inspired me to use more CATs in my courses and lesson plans. I think that the one minute writing is a great idea to get thoughts that are fresh on the students minds and to help determine if I have covered the material adequately and effectively.

Hi Gwendolyn- Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, as teachers, we certainly are not in it for the money! It is that great feeling of satisfaction that we get when we see our students excited about learning. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Since we are in a career focused learning environment and there is a hands on for many modules, that is the best time to use CATs. The light bulb goes off and I love to see their face light up. It is a good feeling to know that the students have been reached and they are engaging in learning and really enjoying the experience.

lab assessments are a good guage to see where more emphasis is needed during the class lecture

Hi Melissa- Thanks for your post to the forum. Timeliness is also important - the sooner students can practice a skill after learning the relevant concepts, the better! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I think it helps to incorporate these techniques so that students gain more confidence in what they are doing. Once they actually get to do it hands on, it sometimes helps them put it all togeher, and better understand why they are learning the material.

The classes that I teach have a classroom and a lab component. I find that some students are stronger in one area than in the other. The assessments in each area helps the student who is stronger in one area than the other be able to focus on the area that needs more attention or study time. It also helps me to make sure that the student is competent in each. I try to incorporate a crossover of material in the assessments to determine if any problems are due to lack of learning the material or due to learning style.

Hi Danielle- Thanks for your post to the forum. I'm glad that you got some useful ideas from this Module! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

After learning about CATs I would love to use chain notes the last 30 minutes of class. That way I can review what is important and allow students to show me, their classmates and themselves what they have learned. Then review these chain notes which would reflect exam topics. Chain notes would draw students into the learning experience.

I like using CATs. They help me to know what the students have learned and retained from my teachings. Also, the feedback to the students is a confirmation of what they have learned. It is very beneficial for them to grow and learn and CATs is a great tool to do that.

Hi Kellie- Thanks for your post to the forum. I also use CATs to help me prepare for the next class - they let me know where I need to review.

Hi Steven- Thanks for your post to the forum. I'm sure that you will find CATs a useful tool in your classroom. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I like using minute papers at the end of the day. This allows the student time to tell me what they got out of the class and what I could do to help them get more out of the class the next time. I can assess how I am doing as an instructor as well as give each student personal feedback.

I admit that I have not been using formal CATs in my classroom, but I can see the advantages these exercises have. I plan to incorporate them into my educational formats.

HI Sadie - Your daily review of the previous day's concepts is excellent! Susan

By reviewing the previous days lesson with students i am able to assess who needs more help with what concept. When we are in lab and applying the concepts we have learned is another time to review and use the feed back given to help all students.

for hands on learners giving feedback at the appropriate time is an essential confidence builder.

I have also used the minute paper, both orally and writing. I usually try to give the class a series of "themes" for the day-really the objectives- and use their feedback to measure whether those themes were in fact conveyed and understood.

I would use these after a lecture or activity to see if the correct meaning of the topic is getting through. This can be done be minute papers or summarized activities.
