Hi Doris- Your frequent and regular feedback to your students is excellent! Best wishes - Susan
Hi Doris- Giving your students that comparative feedback is excellent! Best wishes - Susan
The software we use allows us to continually enter grades and print up-to-date evaluations of student progress. I enter all grades regularly and give students these sheets at the first meeting of our class each week. Students like to look at the overall class average on each entered quiz or test to see how they compare. I also try to use breaks to run scantron response sheets so that I can give students instantaneous feedback when time permits.
One-minute papers; class discussions; quizzes; study guides
Daily quizzes and open discussions after each class session is a good formative evaluation strategy.
My students have scheduled quiz every week and also on the other day I ALWAYS give POP quizzes, sometimes 2 in one day! I think this has kept them on ther toes and allows them to see how they are doing in the course.
The use of periodic tests at logical points that allow the student to demonstrate an understanding of the subject matter for their benefit. The test type can vary based on the subject matter and students. But it allows for positive reinforcement of learning.
Hi James - Thanks for your post to the forum. i also like to use those sort of informal evalations that allow students to self-assess while giving us some progress information in a non-threatening manner. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Ungraded take home quizes or reading assignments that are gone over in the following class can be helpful in letting the students know how they are progressing and what questions they need to ask as well as giving the teacher an idea of how the class is progressing as a whole.
Frequent quizzes on new material can be helpful

I utilize quizzes, role-playing exercises, short papers, and exams for evaluation methods. I then schedule confidential one-on-one meetings with each student to update them on their progress.
I think quizzes and discussion are both very good ways of assessing students. I find that it is hard to get some students to participate in open discussions so also having quizzes allows me to make sure those students are on track as well.
i uses weekly quizes pop quizes, bouns questions. I agree it is the best way to do this.
Hi Andrea- Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree, students do respond well to scheduled assessments and assignments. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Beth - Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, frequently checking for understanding while lecturing is essential! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Emmie- Thanks for your postb to the forum. i like your idea of terming your formative assessments "a review of lessons"! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I like calling it a review of the lessons so that students are too nervous and relax and discover how much they really do know and also how much they need to study for future tests.
Find that checking what students have absorbed from session periodically during class help to know if you are on course or have "lost" the students.
Daily quizes helps to assess the students. The students know there will be a quiz, this helps, because students are taking notes and focused on the dailey lesson.
