Yes...
In Lab there papers are graded as a form of evaluation on how the content of the course is delivered.

the labs that we use is a great form of knowlage testing that fits our course greatly

Yes I use a gauge hook-up and removal in the main lab.

Yes I use the skills applactions. In our tests it will prove what they have learned and prove there knowlage of the subject matter.I alse belive ti will help them diognosis future challanges.

Hi Bernard- By taking your skills application assessment a step higher to the "why, how, and what -results level, you are pushing your students to a higher level - well done! Susan

Hi Jeff - The immediacy of asking your students questions while they are engaged in a lab is really valuable as it gives you a chance to assess where they are as well as providing an opportunity to give feedback. Best wishes! Susan

yes we use a couple of skill testing. One approach is the hands on method during lab to make sure the student's compentency is up and with a final lab exam to make sure all areas are covered for the course.

YES, I have to test the students on there skill many times during the course,if they can not master skill application we work on there weak areas then test again .they must master the procedures befor moveing on.

Yes,
In courses 36, 22, and 17 we use skill Application tests to see how well the students can use the test equipment that we have covered during that Course. I find that during the labs,” while each student is working with the equipment,” is a great time to Quiz them on the Practical uses of the tool that they are using. And if they are struggling to answer the questions then I can spend a little time helping them, one on one!

Yes on a regular time frame .Questions of all types let you know if the student has a general understanding but actually doing the task shows you they have a full understanding of what was given to them, also gives you areas you might need to improve

Yes, I do use skill application test in lab. as skills that will be necessary in the work force, it is very important that students understand the concept why, the procedure how, and the results what. By testing out in lab the skills are demonstrated and can be evaluated. I think this is a very important test as a career training institution.

Steve,

Yes I do use skill application as much as possible in each course that I teach.

In Powertrains. There are several for example. If we talk about a trans overhaul. We will have an excersise that applies. In phase 5 labs are discussed and then we go to lab and work on the related lab.

I agree. For my students it is one thing to be able to identify the ingredients for a certain recipe but another to be able to execute a perfect product.

Yes,In lab they must be able to perform the lab tasks they are given and at what skill leval they can perform them.

Hi David - Welcome to ED 103! By asking your students to take the questions a step further, they are learning high order reasoning skills. Great work! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

Yes, a student must show not only what but why. Being able to explain how one arrived had a proper diagnoses will show that there is an understanding of the concepts and application rather than just guessing at the right answer.

Yes, Skill Application Testing gives the students a chance to demonstrate that they can do.

Skill application testing in some form is used daily in a lab enviorment where the student is graded on their ability to perform a lab task or skill. They may have to perform it mulitple times to become proficent in that skill.

Yes. I cannot place anymore value on skill application than on conceptual knowledge. I cannot allow students to use the excuse that I am a hands on learner to justify a lack of conceptual knowledge. I could teach a chimp to rebuild a carb, by using snacks and a stick. If the chimp does what I show him, he gets a snack. If he makes a mistake he gets whacked. Now, if he repeats these tasks enough times with the same carb, he will master that carb. But give him a different carb, and he will have a melt down. He knows that he is going to get whacked. He did not learn the concept of the carb and so he cannot apply that to other carbs. He only knows that one carb. Technicians must have conceptual knowledge as well as hands on skills. Information cannot become knowledge unless a student can use it in a real world application. So skill application testing is importan, but not more important than conceptual knowledge.

Yes .I belive the lab tasks reinforce what they have learned .That puts them responsiable for there own grade
