Hi Catherine - Thanks for your post to the forum. You are using a nice mix of concept and application assessments! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Hi Vicki- Yes, as you mention, we are always assessing even though it may not be through formal testing. Susan

Hi Kellie- Thanks for your post to the forum. You are using a nice mix of assessment types. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

It really depends on the content that I am testing over. At times I use a combination of multiple choice, true/false, and short answer. If there is a particular skill involved, then the student will also have to perform a skill application.

I use what I think is most appropriate for the desired outcome. Objective testing for facts, terminology and subjective testing for critical thinking, problem solving and application. Written tests are not the only testing I use. Students should know they are being tested all the time!

I tend to use multiple choice and asking for “the best answer”. This prepares my medical assisting students for their RMA exam. They get used to pulling out the best answer because in life and medicine there can be more than one right or wrong answer. They need to use critical thinking to know which is best.

I selecting test formats based on what class I am teaching and my students. I teach a computer course which the midterm and final consist of multiple choice questions, a Word document they have to recreate as well as an Excel document. The final also has multiple choice questions as well as a PowerPoint document they have to recreate. The multiple choice questions ask the students about computers, software, systems, Internet, etc. This is all content I discuss in class. Students can also find answers in their books and from chapter review questions I give them every week.

I reall think that neither multiple choice nor true/false formats are so effective. I do use both of them but on my tests they accounts for about 50 percent, the rest are essays, filling blanks and case scenarios.

HI Phyllis- Thanks for your post to the forum. Gearing your tests to the material that you are teaching is ideal. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I like to create tests geared to the pertinent material. All my tests are short answer.

In the accelerated learning format, you must assess student comprehension of a large amount of material that has been presented in a short time. Objective tests work best for that purpose. I prefer multiple choice, with some completion tests and a very occasional multiple choice. I also like to use one or two short answer questions to sample the ability to analyze. The challenge comes from the very wide range of skill sets for our students. How do you design a test that challenges the higher level students without overwhelming others at a lower level?

I use a mix of formats when testing true/false, multiple guess, and fill in

At our institution we use true/false, multiple choice, and practical assessments to help ensure our students are learning the class objectives.

In my experience students do relatively well with the true/false, multiple choice, and practical assessments.

Multiple choice and T/F seem to always work best for students.

Competences for our area of lerning in culinary arts is key

We generally use multiple choice as well.

multiple choice formats,I believe,is the best way to asses students learning.true or false tests give the student a 50/50 chance, which leads to possible "lucky guesses"

The class I am teaching, medical lab or communications class, and the students I have in my course.

One of the most difficult tests, especially to evaluate is the essay. Is extremely wide open and if you do not have precaution, the students easily go out of the topic and the evaluation is complicate. But is very nice tool when you force the students to use the common sense.
