I test students using short answer, true false, matching, fill in the blank, general knowledge, and open response questions. It helps them to draw information from different parts of the test. In one section they can forget an answer but the answer may appear in a different form somewhere else on the test. With culinary, it is a lot of factual knowledge with applications mixed up nicely so it can be very confusing.

i agree test should be based on what we are trying to evaluate and how much students are retaining

We test using skill application on the calssic and most basic fundamentals of our career field. We use these tests to reinforce the aquired knowledge throughout the program. The students should feel comfortable appling these skills to any given scenario as they "go out" into their chosen carrier.

Hi April - Welcome to Ed 103! Using the sort of assessment that they will encounter in the national exam is an excellent idea! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. - Susan

I use multiple choice 90% of the time, my students will have to take a national board exam when they complete there schooling and the board exam is all multiple choice. I feel that this helps to prepare them more.

Does this test what they have learned? And what are the most important things that I am trying to teach my students.

I use a range of testing formats to try to address the learning styles of all of my students. The best and most relevant to my field are skill application tests.

we do both paper tests and actuall projects in which the learner has to apply what he has learned and it has to be completed in an alloted time and has to be correct

The students need to be able to apply what they learn here in the field. I'm thinking short answer test will be the most helpful

I use multiple formats. I use multiple choice, true/false, and open ended. I mix it up because it students have proven to do very well with a variety of methods. In this manner, the test is not too hard, but it is not to easy either.

Hi Patti - Welcome to ED 103! What a very responsive instructor you are! It is wonderful that you are able to vary your assessments so much. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

The objective of test is the goal of the design. What information is considered of values will dictate the design of the test. What is of importance will determine the evaluation.

Being a Career based School I find multiple choice to be most effective. They cover more information

I like to use a variety of testing strategies. This way, I can reach as many students as possible. I teach a computer class, so I have both multiple choice tests as well as hands-on exams where they have to create something. Some of the students do not work well under pressure and cannot relate to what they do on the computer to a paper tests, some can take tests well and like scantrons or multiple choice tests. Sometimes, I ask the students on what they prefer and create a test based on their preference.

I try to use a variety of testing formats from multiple choice, true/false, matching and short answer. Where I teach I found that essay formats are unsuccessful.

Hi Seth - Welcome to ED 103! You are covering all the bases in your assessment strategy - well done. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

The disciplines and applications of knowledge in a certain subject to a major extent impact the testing format.

I tend to select a format which best assists myself, the instructor, and will also benefit the student. I often choose my testing format around the amount of time I have to grade and also assess and then provide feedback to the students. When using objective testing methods, I try and use all formats so students have the opportunity to be tested and assessed on many different levels. Because of time limits, due to the length of the overall program, my subjective testing only utilizes the skill application testing methods...this allows me to provide feedback right away and still assess if students can perform required tasks.

since i teach at a culinary school practical hands on test work the best

The criteria that I use for selecting testing formats is that I base the testing formats according to what skills and information I am testing on.
