As Mr. Spock would say" fascinating".I Myself, even though I love music ,find it distracting while trying to absorb technical information.I need absolute quiet.I do teach a technical course so I will try this just to see how well it works.
Very interesting to note the impact on grades. I too have seen this influence of calming, even on a group of blackberry addicted executives.

I teach apparel production classes, so after the initial intructions, lecture, etc....I put music on, it seems to help get their work flow, and they stay on task better than a room with no music. They also seem to talk less to each other and get distracted from their task on hand.
I have seen what music can do to help stimulate the students. It seems to help with easing any tension and make the classroom a more relaxed atmosphere, especially on test days. I have gotten better grades with doing this versus without music.
John,
I have used music in some corporate leadership development sessions & found it helpful as well, especially for reflective journaling.

I notice that having music, especially instrumental versions, actually help the students to relax when doing an exercise paper. It has helped with grades and attention to detail on papers.
Hi Deborah!
I - on the other hand - cannot study with any distractions. So - instructors have to find a balance for using music in the classroom.
Keep up the good work!
