Music in the classroom
I have used music in my class's for years. Having music playing while the students are entering energizes them. Music is common for all cultures and I use it to bring students together.
I found this to be very interesting and am willing to try this! I am so very glad that you gave us avenues to find good classroom music.
Music is the subject of what I teach. It is a force that grows in some people. Most of my students are very talented.
Melissa,
music can be a great way to facilitate the learning for the students & help them really focus on the material.

Music can work really well but sometimes it can be a distraction for some students. I have had good responses that it worked really well during group exercises, case studies, in class work and sum quiz times. I have also had a few students that indicated it was a bit of a distraction...so we must realize and remember that what works for some does not necessarily work as well for others.
I love playing music in my classroom during an assignment time or Lab time. Especially during lab, the music tends to ease students nerves.
I use both music and videos for the students. I like to use the youtube "people are amazing" videos. The music is upbeat and the videos remind them to be who you are and accomplish great things.
John,
and research supports this idea too.

The majority of my students tell me that classical music has the greatest impact on their learning/concentration.
I also recently stumbled upon the information of the mozart effect. I use it to prepare for my own studies and bringing it into the classroom is genius!
In teaching a computer class, the labs can be very quiet and the silence sometimes un-nerving. Most of my students bring headphones in and play music on their personal devices, otherwise I will play music during labs and exams, I have been doing this for years.
I have never had music in the classroom, I think this a great idea. Cant wait to incorporate this into our learning. I have always worked in an office where music was played, it did bring a positive feel to the office.
I like the idea of using music as well, however at my school the walls seem to be paper thin and it is not usually an option.
I found that music in the repair shop that a worked very distracting maybe because it wasn’t music to me but a lot of screaming. But I think some classical music in the class room will work. I am going to try it.
sometimes music works sometimes it don't. it can have a adverse affect because of different cultures so I leave it up to the students .
Our campus used to play music in the classrooms during production and clean up but we've since been instructed not to. The reason behind this was that if it may be distracting to just one student then we cannot justify the benefits to the rest of the students. I envy those of you that can still use this powerful tool.
Music is common for most people, have it in the background helps students to concentrate. I use it all the time.
I agree. Most students are all about having music. It calms them and helps them focus on their work.
Tanya,
This is a great approach as it can help relax the class & get them ready to learn.

Usually I find nice music related to the topic of the class- I teach music related topics and play it before the class starts.
