I just can't figure it out

I'm a new instructor. I really don't want to lecture for my entire class period, but I try to come up with Vet Tech related games and can't! I've done jeopardy for finals review and breed bingo for the breed topic. But what else is there??
For stuff like medical records? or OSHA?

Engage, explore, initiate, plan, support, learn, creative are just a few words that I think of as I read your statment "students come up with games on their own"! GOOD JOB - I really like participative learning.

You can use your Jeopardy, for terminology

For medical records they can create a chart.

If your course involves students following various procedures you may want to try a flow chart exercise. I have a blank flowchart and a set of crads that fit into the blank boxes of a flow chart. Students have to work together to decide which step goes in which box. It works great in my class as it chellenges them to organize, categorize, prioritize, and they physically have to place the crds correctly as well.

One day I had two rather awnry students come back to the room with a huge ball of aluminum foil. At first I thought, were did they get that, and how much trouble are they going to get into. Then I had them make a bowling ball out of it and we used empty bottles as pins. I divided the class into two and asked them questions about the material we were going over in class. If they answered correctly they got a chance to bowl for thier team. 20 minutes into it we were having so much fun and being so loud, others were looking into the room to see waht we were doing.

You know Debra, simple games such as this can be very beneficial with students. When learning becomes fun, students are going to be successful.

I would try a different sort of game, like "whose the boss" or "first liar hasn't got a chance" both involve role playing.

I'm a fairly new instructor and we play a game of baseball. I break up the class into two teams. Then they get about about 10-15 minutes to come up with as many questions and answers as they can. The team up to bat asks the other team a question. If it's right they get to go to first base, if it's wrong it's an out. this game gets both teams learning. They have to know both the question and the answer before we play so every player from each team is learning and it's fun!

I've had students come up with games on their own. I say, "Here is the material. Come up with a game to help your peers learn the material." Students are very creative and teaching others helps students learn information well.
