I will have students complete study guides prior to coming to class.
I will try to chunk learning and have students learn pieces of material at a time. This will allow them to add things to their memory in small doses.
Paul,
this is a great strategy & shows some of the creativity that we can use even in constrained situations.

i woudl try to implement more and repeat info to make sure it stays recent.
I am teaching Accounting to non-accounting students. I think utilizing memory games to match terms to definitions, would be beneficial. Also, I do tend to cover the more intense items of the evening during the first portion. I try to redirect through activity as often as possible, the problem is that taking too many breaks causes a loss in the train of thought. I often have to cover the topic in more than one way to allow for different learning styles.
In a couple of weeks I will be teaching climbers and back country skiers Whiteout Navigation using a map, compass. There is limited time for the course. The material is a bit technical and requires hands on map and compass work to understand how to do white out navigation. Through accelerated learning I will use the Sequence Method. Traditionally I have begun by talking definitions and building on moving from point A to point B. This time around I will start from point B and work back words. At the end of the class each student will receive a white paper on what they learned which will help them even more retain the information so they are able to use it in real time.
I think i would use it as a possible project for an assignment; one that they will have to apply to the class. I would use it in this way because if it is for a grade, students are more prone to applying themselves more to use the technique. In doing this, i would actually be doing something differently, as i have never tried this technique before on the students.
I usually begin my classes by writing the objectives on the white board and I also provide a lesson plan to each student with the objectives listed in the order they will be covered. I usually read through the objectives at the begining. What I find myself not doing is following through at the end of each hour before break identifying the objectives covered that hour and key points. I need to be more aware of wrapping each hour and begining each hour again identifying all the objectives covered. The class sessions I teach are usually 2 to 3 hours with 10 miniute breaks on the top of each hour.
Donna ,
this is so true as they can then associate a specific fact/topic with movements or situations/settings & then they can more easily recall the information.

One of the things I occasionally do now is the review of the last class at the beginning and the review of the current class at the end. I will start doing this more often. I know it works, I just have to make sure that I reserve time for it.
I need to be aware that the student is capable of using the information provided to continually demonstrate computing skills.
Lately I have been utilizing more hands on class time for projects and individual assessment.
I believe that hands on learning creates memory skills, it is important to lecture and cover the materials, but letting them be involved in the actuality of the subject, sparks the memory.
I will work to more closely connect the nature of a given skill or subject topic to the delivery and use of memory research. In this way, it will be possible to better build retention and recall among learners within the context of the skill or knowledge on which they are being assessed.
i like the idea of using flash cards in class to help learn terminology along with cause and effects
The method I use for teaching new information to students is to go from the known, to the unknown. I first must find out what the students know about a particular subject and then build off that knowledge. Every student and every class is not the same and in order for me to teach effectively, I must do as much as I can to get to know my students. Also, as the class moves forward, I will use retention and recall to tie lesson objectives together.
I have a bad memory what can i do.
Maria,
and that recap is a great way to set the stage for the new learning/information for that day.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
I like to recap on what was discussed the previous day to enhance their retention on that subject. Also, as the student go on to other classes, it would be helpful if instructor would build on what the students already know.
Marianne,
this is a great idea as they get the benefit from the game & from reviewing material while constructing it.
