Measuring Effectiveness

I measure my effectiveness by my ability to communicate. Communication is the cornerstone of success. Effective communication aids learning and development, builds bridges and relationships, while ineffective communication can create misunderstandings, conflict and confrontation.

As a result, I pay special attention to:

• What I say
• How I say it
• What I meant
• How its received and interpreted
• Interpersonal dynamics
• Timing
• Voice, tone pitch and rhythm
• And ask questions to gain or confirm understanding and comprehension

Great punchlist! I reviewed a video of a lecture I made and found it very interesting. Both with comparison of your comments, and the points in the Measuring Effectiveness section. Unless you view yourself, you don't realize how you actually present yourself. It is a great learning tool; I recommend trying it if you have the opportunity.

I have my students give feedback after the first day to see if I am communicating with everyone or am I missing a few of the students. The ones that I am loosing I ask how I can better communicate for there learning style.

It also matters what the students already know and how students relate to what I say. But that also is a part of the relationship. How far can that student meet the instructor along the way and how much farther can you take that student along that path.

Communication is conditioned after the relationship I have with each student.

Relationship gives context and meaning to what I say to an individual student
