Hi Rebecca!

When we are able to share life experiences, it makes us all real.

Good job!

Hi Laura!

Everyday life is about having new experiences that provide learnig opportunities. We need to help students relate these to "book learning".

Keep up the good work!

I find that students better understand the material when it is presented in a way that they can relate to. Also, they are usually very interested in hearing about real life experience for there chosen field from someone who actually has actually lived it.

We all remember "stories" that we are told. I can still remember stories that my nursing instructors told me. I might not remember all the medical terms and such but I remember the stories and it helped me to remember how it applied to my situtations when I was out practicing on mine own.

The examples given help the students to put themselves in a situation that they have not been in. It gives them a precursor of preparedness in the event the situation would arise in their path. If the example is memorable they are more likey to be prepared from that memory.

It is important to help them relate to the information. By relating to it, they will be more inteested in the topic of discussion. I often reference something that a student said in a previous class. The students like to know that I paid attention to what they said. They like to hear references to the fields of study that they are involved in at school.

I find that in my Patient Care class it helps the students to apply the information better. I usually use personal stories that i encountered while working in the hospital and also when i was the patient. i do group discussions and get feedback on examples that the students have encountered. If the students have a story that applies to a topic they are able to recall that information at a later time.

Using memorable experiences not only helps the students to learn more, but it also helps the studetns to transfer the information from short term tot long term memomry.

I use real life examples all the time. It helps to maintain the students attention and breaks up the lecture to keep everyone awake and engaged.

Great approach Richard!

Repetition reenforces the learning process!

Good job!

I find that it helps with retention

Examples provide relevance while reinforcing learning. This is especially true when a student is having a difficult time understanding the key points of the lecture. The instructor can provide and example then have the student relate a life-long learning example too. In this way the instructor can determine if the student has captured the key instruction points.

Hi Michael!

It ties learned information to the real world!

Keep up the good work!

I feel that students benefit greatly from real life memorable experiences. I give the topic relevance and helps students retain information.

It solves the question, "why am I taking this class".
By pointing out the key points and topics, the student has a clearer understanding on how the class will flow and how the new information will be used.

Even today I remember some examples that past teachers gave me over 25 years ago. They are memorable to me because I could relate to them and thus relate to the material that was being presented to me. Hearing a personal example from the intructor that relates to the topic often makes the students feel at ease as well as build interest in the content.

Hi Earl!

As I sit here thinking about memorable examples and how we use those in the classroom, I was wondering if we could give that as an assignmnet. For example, ask students to write down memorable examples as they are doing their reading assignments. Then during class exchange those examples with other students for sharing in class. Maybe make it into a game by?????having the class guess which classmate had the experience.

Might not work - but could add something different and relatable in a different way especially for those less experienced students!!??

I am always trying to come up with something that gets everyone engagged.

Keep up the good work!

It is the best way to make the material relatable.

Especially in the medical fields, our students are very interested in some of the incredible stories that we are able to share because of our experience and i find it is a good way to get the students involved and asking questions.
