I agree eye contact is important to let your students know you are listening and also encourages them to have more interaction in the class.

It helps to develop a realtionship with student as well as shows you are talking to everyone!

maintaining eye contact in classroom, to it shows that I do knowledge the students, let them know they are part of the class education, at the same time it keep them ready for an answer in case a question will rise.

Gives you the opportunity to connect with the students and perhaps re-focus individuals.

It's both positive and negative. It can make students feel picked on or singled out, but it can also make them feel part of the lecture, part of the class, part of a team, and cared about. It's also both positive and negative for the instructor. It makes you do better as a teacher to concentrate on all students, it makes the students pay attention which helps your lecture move more smoothly and timely, but it also has a way of "showing" favorites, "showing" bad apples, etc.

Then, you are a person to them, not just a voice and they are more apt to zero in on the discussion. Their listening ability focuses in on you and what you are saying.

When making eye contact it does two things: 1) It tells the student you are showing them attention and care. 2) It cause the student to not play with their phone or any other distraction because you watching them even if you are not.

Eye contact with students acknowledges them and brings them into the learning experiences. With eye contact, the instructor is not simply talking at the students, but communicating with the students.

I try and do the same thing, it helps you get a read of the students comprehension.

I make it a point to look at everyone, that way I can see who is actually listening to the conversation or topic.

It shows that you are actively listening. It also lets the students knwo that you are interested in what they are saying. You should not stare though as it can sometimes be offensive. Good eye contact can also show confidence.

Definitely a good tool to bring students into your lecture.

To determine wether or not the student understands the message you are trying to convey

Greetings Anna!

I totally agree with you. Eye contact has so much value in a classroom - builds confidence, confirms student's importance, helps students to retain information, keeps students' focused, etc. A must for successfull classroom interaction between instructor and student.

The value of having eye contact with students is that you let students know you are there for them. By making sure you look at everyone of your students, it makes them feel they are a part of the class. If you ignore a certain section of the room, students may think you are not paying attention to them and that's when disruptive behavior starts.
