For me the value of eye contact has several purposes. One, it shows the student you are interested in them and it also allows me to gage if the students are grasping what I am teaching. I also believe it show confidence in the teacher.
I do agree that having eye contact with the students giove them confidence and shows that I care whart they think about the subject we are discussing
I believe good eye contact is key in teaching. It shows you care just as much as being a good listener.
Absolutely and they feel they involved.
Lets the student know that you are aware of them
I have tried this in class and it really does work. You can see the change in the students’ attention and involvement in the lecture. Some topics are not going to engage the student but it is important to keep them in the moment and on task.
It helps draw students back in and acknowledges them as individuals. It can also help the teacher--especially when there is positive eye contact. When listeners are looking positive through their eyes and other body language it can give the instructor a boost. It's give and take: the more you connect with "accepting" or "warm" eyes, the more likely the students will respond to you the same way. So it helps the students AND the instructor.
It tells the students they are getting special attention. It allows for sensing how the information comes accross.
I had an instructor when I was at school who looked at the floor, the wall, the table, somebody else--anywhere but at ME when I was trying to talk to him or ask him a question. This was 10 years ago and if I bring back the memories in my mind I can still feel the frustration and dissapointment. That alone was enough to make me have no desire to be in the class at all, and to this day sticks out in my mind as my only college class that I did not love. Eye contact is the oldest, simplest, effortless, and most successful tool to let someone know that you care. Like the Lev's jeans of mannerisms; eye contact will never go out of style!
It is extremely important because it shows students that you see them, and they are an important part of the classroom.
To me Eye contact helps the students b/c it makes the feel like a part of the lecture.
Having eye contact with students i feel makes them be part of the lecture they feel the instructor is talking directly to them and they are more inclined to focus and be involved in the class.
it makes the student think you are only talking and teaching to them
It communicates respect, a desire to make individual contact and serves as an invitation to participate in the learning process.
I agree and I find that each student responds to that brief attention you've given them. Also a smile at an appropriate moment says volumes to the student(s).
Hi Dorothy!
It's also very encouraging for students to feel like they are important to the classroom process.
Keep up the good work!

Your absolutely correct, Dimitria! There is a fine balance between eye contact and interacting with the entire class. Both are important to the learning process.
Good job!
