communication skills

When starting a new class. I take a few minutes to go around the class to have all students to say their name, where there from and what other schools they have been to

I often inquire as to what the students would most like to "get out" of the class. I often discuss their goals and infuse information from the course that I feel will be relevant in helping them meet these goals.

I do this as well Rebecca. It give me a sense of the student's educational background and offers the student a sense of belonging to the group. I also like to have them tell the class how long they have been in attendance at the school and what their major is so that they may identify with others in the group. Are there any other introductory questions that you ask students?
