My steely eyed stare. Sometimes when the class becomes a bit rowdy a glance over the top of my glasses tells them they have gone over the line. this does not work for everyone, but I find it to be quite effective!

I find wlking around the room helps keep the students attention since they have to follow you, this also gives me a chance to make eye contact with the students. Making eye contact helps keep their attention and helps to know if they are paying attention, also it hrlps to keep thier attention on you and the subject.

Hi Audie!

Non-verbal is a very strong form of communication. But we must keep in mind that non-verbal communication is often based on perception. Which means that we must be very careful so that we do not run the risk of alleinating students.

Greetings Kenneth!

Isn't it interesting that so much of what instructors do hinges on good communication skills? We have to be masters at using all types of communication styles/skills.

I move around the room. I find it keeps the students attention on me. I find by moving around the room it also keeps them off guard so i have less problems with cell phone use during class.

When listening to a student and moving my head in response to what they are telling me or point to a diagram as a lead in to what I need as an answer from them and then having them complete their answer.

Mine is silence when the students are talking I waite form the to finish. Then i will go on with the subject that we on.

I find that moving around in the clss room helps my students stay "focused" more, my voice is in differant locations constantly, and i do like the pause effect that was mentioned here, going to try it out!

The way i present myself to the class my demeanerthe way i move around the class and keep them ingaged

Greetings James!

These are positive ways to place emphasis in many areas. It's the negative non-verbal communication (or what I call and attitude) that we can do without especially from instructors/facilitators. We set the stage for the behaviors and attitudes in our classroom.

There is several ways to get the attention of the class with using your voice. One way is to stop talking, another way I found that works is to let is to look in their direction, don’t forget body language little movements around the room helps to keep them engaged in the material.

I don't really have a single most successful non-verbal communication, but several that work very well for me. I like to move about the room, use my arms and hands to punctuate a point, smile, wink or make an astonished face when a student or group of students comes to specific conclusion. All of these work effectively, and are fun.

I’m always moving around the room lecturing from every corner. I also like the strategy of pausing for affect and giving the student’s time to think about what was just said or asked about.

I move around a lot always trying to look around for students who might have a question about the subject covered.I maintain eye contact with students it helps me determine if the students might need more instruction.

I feel that one of my best ways of Non Verbal Communication is practicing my Mime skills. It really helps to keep the stress off of my vocal cords. Sometimes the students get a little confused, and that is when I tell them a story.

I have nevcer sat still or stood in one place. But I use a sit down and be quiet before I begin reviewing, ie: I just finnnished talking about a new pizeo injector, to give the student an opertunity I will sit down for several seconds waiting for a question if no is forth coming I stand move to the center of the room and toss a basic question out. This works well as once I sit they know a question nis coming either from me or a fellow student.

Silence sometimes works well- not for conveying class info, but for getting the class attention. Stopping in mid sentence helps. Eventually everyone nudges everyone else to see why I have stopped talking!

Hi Jeff!

You are certainly supporting positive student outcomes because you are making students feel like they are important to the learning process.

Hi David!

And - I know your students must really respond to this type of interaction. I am interested in knowing your experiences with your students because of the eye contact. Please share!Q

I like to walk around the classroon and show them the item we are discussing and then pause to get eye contact to see if they grasp and understand what we are discussing.
