I have found this to be important in any teaching situation. It will give them a real life example of the situation or content that they can go back and relate to.

Garrett,
and this is a great way for the students to see how theories are applied in real life.

I personally believe that using personalized stories to each chapter that we are covering for the day is one of the best mediums I have to ensure that my students have understood the concept being conveyed in the curriculum. One of the issues I found with this storytelling is making sure that I am speaking to my audience. I would also encourage a slight embellishment to nail the story home if necessary.

Because they may be able to relate to the example as one of thier own or simular to one they might have had

The memorable event helps them remeber the subject matter better.

Christopher,
yes and with adult learners who have previous experience, we can ask them to share examples or ideas of where the concepts might apply. This helps in learning & also shows we appreciate that they have these prior experiences.

Especially when teaching adults, they need to see how lesson material applies to daily life and their intended career. Using memorable examples from the field, not only helps studets remember the material, but also gives them pegs to hand furtehr ideas on and ties the lesson to life experience.

Douglas good morning,

I concur. Giving and telling examples of pos and neg situations that have happened and sharing with the students allows them the opportunity to hear and see that we are individuals just as they are. We are not exempt by any means.

Showing applications to the real world outside of the classroom helps the student visualize what it is really like outside the nest or their in the classroom setting comfort zone.

You give them these nuggets to help nurture, prepare and guide them into the direction they should go in order to succeed in life.

In a vocational setting the students are preparing for a future career. A real life example of what we are discussing can bring the material to life and give them an opportunity to experience a probable future task vicariously.

Memorable examples are crucial in the more esoteric courses such as economics or finance. A graph or chart may have some meaning, BUT applying it to a real world application for the students is paramount for effective learning and knowledge transfer. The example will be longer remembered and the graph or chart soon forgotten!

Heidi,
they really do provide pegs on which to hang the theorectical concepts.

A memorable example gives the students something to connect to. I also use it to show that I too have made mistakes. I usually use something funny as an example so that people remember it better and are put at ease.

Dr. Enrique,
the word pictures that accompany these memorable examples really do help the concepts come alive & assist with the retention & understanding.

It helps them to understand the importance of understanding the topic. In our field (Veterinary Technology) it can sometimes be difficult for students to appreciate the importance of understanding a concept until they know how it can impact a patient.

simply because the student can visualize the topic by relating to the story and understanding the subject matter better.

travis,
this is a great point as it helps really show what these careers are all about & to get excited about the reality.

In the Criminal Justice field, most of the students only hear or see what this field is about from Hollywood. These false stories are a far cry from the reality of the jobs out there. It's a reality check for them to hear my stories and experiences in Law Enforcement.

I agree that we are not all perfect and we all learn from our mistakes. In my experience with students it is a real icebreaker and helps them relate better with me and each other fellow students.
