I am able to evaluate the student's individual effort in a group by having them to assign eah other a portion of the assignment. I evealuate how each person interacts with one another as well as how much effort they individually put into the assignment.
Interesting you say this Halina!
I have a friend who is in his first college English class and has a writing assignment. The teachers process in that you have a preliminary draft which you bring to class for peer review. So - when the peer review occured, my friend said it was VERY clear that the woman had not read any of the book and tried to wing it! She had very little written and what she had was not accurate. But he encouraged her to do a better job.
Keep up the good work!

since each member has a specific task, I can evaluate individual effort by their responses. If I get a one sentence response instead of more details that usually tells me someone did not do much work.
By assigning a project and carefully monitoring how it is progressing by asking pointed but open questions
Making sure each student does their own work; I try to have a "meeting" with each group asking if their partners are doing their fair share.
It depends on the nature of the project. For a battle or campaign analysis project (military), each member of the group presented a different aspect of the battle or campaign. There was also some sort of visual display that the group had to present.
I evaluate individual effort while working with a group by assigning specific assignments to each group member.
Anytime that I do a group project I grade them on two parts. First the overall group grade and second each of the group members grades the others using a rubric that I provide. I then average those grades together. If I feel that the peer grade is unfairly high or low then I often ask the members if they have been honest or not. It works well the majority of the time.
Hi Anece!
How do you evaluate their communication skills?

Typically all adult studetns want to learn. That being said, sometimes the weaker students can teach the stronger students in an entirely different way than they are accustumed!
I like the idea of having each group member evaluate one another prior to grades being assigned. Letting the students know this is part of the grade allows them to concentrate from the beginning of pulling their weight.
It is always good to give every student something to do in the group. That way it will help them feel that they are needed in this project
Hi Mary Jane!
Do you grade them individually as well as a group?
Good job!

I have an individual and group component to the person's grade. The student is given a specific task of which he or she is graded and the student's grade for the assignment also reflects the group's final work product as a whole.
on how well they are communicating to each other or one another in the group.
Most of the time, I assign specific tasks to each person in the group. Occaisionally I will grade each based on the outcome of the entire group, BUT, this only works with my most advanced students who already know each other's strengths and who are very focused. With this method, I also ask each individual member to submit an outline of their group contribution.

assigning different tasks for all members of the lab group, and also keep the groups down to a max. of 3 to 4 per group and i can keep an eye on them easier this way.
I evaluate individual effort of students while they are working with a group by assigning specific task to each student and then have the entire group to generate a combined project as a result of the specific task assigned.
