It is important to share these experiences because they can point out their successes and things that they might have done wrong. It provides them with some insight on their new career path

It is important because building new knowledge on already existing knowledge is the most efficient way for a lot of people to learn.

Not only does it give them a sense of accomplishment, but the younger students may gain valuable knowledge!

It also amazes me how much more the students retain when you use real life experiences as examples, and how they can recall the story you told better than the information that was shared with the story. It definitely gives them a reference point to remember more classroom information.

when i talk about mine . i show them i am human and i made mistakes but i learned from them so i bring that point across

Absolutely Penelope!

Sharing life experiences in the classroom is very important when teaching adult learners. It lets them know that they are not the only one that have problems and issues that make life seem hard. It is a great motivational tool and it gives them hope.

I do agree with this post because I use a lot of life experiences in my field of trainning, and it has helped my students as well. I have noticed that my students pay close attention to the stories and can also engage into the conversation. Students learn from these stories as well as from instructional materials. Life experiences also prepare the students to some incidents that may occur in their field of trainning so they can tackle it when it happens.

Many of the experiences I share with a class relate to the topics covered in the course and give students an insight of real world examples.

Because it relates the subject matter to something they already have exposure to.

Encouraging adult learners to use their life experiences in the classroom helps them get more comfortable with being back in school. Some adult students are very apprehensive about returning to school; allowing them to share their life experiences helps them feel that ALL of their experiences are valuable, not just the academic ones (which may or may not have been successful in the past).

Students learn better when they feel that they have a connection to something and also when they can share something about themselves that shows them in a successful light.

my students love to hear of life experiences. I feel it lets them know that we all make mistakes,we all can achieve our dreams and the we all or human.

Life experiences serve as the base for building upon new knowledge. This is crucial when the adult learner enters/reenters the classroom environment.
These experiences shape “who we are”, reinforces developed abilities and skills and serves as a motivator. Life experiences let us know where we have been and provide structure in defining personal and career goals.

It actually helps them to understand lecture material better. In that they have seen a certain Med.problems in family or friends

Susan I agree, reading about a concept or theory does not bring "to life" all aspects of a thought. By hearing a life experience it can bring together what a student is reading and what a student can expect in the future. Great motivator

Hi Alice!

Sharing life expereinces are such a great learning tool. For one thing, they reenforce what a student has learned in the classroom and helps to prepare them for the job. It can also build communication skills since they are giving information to others.

Keep up the good work!

Other students well usually listen to the other students and respect what they have to say. I find myself letting it go and then trying to guide the conversation the way I would like it to go and sometimes elaborate upon the subject.

When students talk about life experiences, I think it builds confidence. They feel they have information that will help other students.

Hi Beth!

It makes us real! I can remember when I thought my instructors knew everything and now I realize that we learn as much as we share.

Good job!
