Students do not have any yet. and if us as educators can tell a related story to make the subject click it is a very powerful tool.
Using life experiences sometimes give student a break from a serious lecture/discussion. It grasp their attention. I remember when I was a student, when my teacher gave an example of how to apply the concept into real life situation or when she shared her career experiences, it catches my attention and I tend to listen to her story and makes me feel interested to the topic. I will apply the same strategy to the students so I can get their attention to listen and focus on my instructions.
It gives them a sense of being a part of the clasroom process. They feel by sharing their personal experiences it adds relevance as well as life to the topic of discussion
