Patience is a key strategy when working with students of any learning need. I try to find a way to present the topic in many different manners as well, whether it be written, pictorial, or demonstration. I feel this allows everyone a good chance to grasp the concept, particularly when it is quite complex.
Great idea. Sometimes that language barrier for me trying to understand the student can hinder me being able to help the student.
It can be difficult to work with a student who has learning needs, whether they are reading, comprehension or even a language barrier. It's always good to sit with the student one on one to find out what issues they are having and what has worked for them in the past. Having an understanding first will help you to know what course to take with helping them.
Dale,
I like how you incorporate the methods in finding out what kind of learner they are. Knowing is not enough, we need to take action.

It helps to identify what kind of learning style they are, if they are an auditory learner try talking them through a procedure. If they are more of a visual or hands on learner, then give them a visual hands on demo, video, or visual aid.

I use pictures, powerpoint presentations, hands-on activities, and real-life examples.
Students who may have problems comprehending the material I would sent them to the learning resource center were they have the ability to use labs and get tutoring.
I find that individual attention, and finding concepts they are already familure with help conciderably when delving into new concepts.
Theresa,

I do a lot of one on one instruction and I also provide extra assignments to help the student grasp the concepts being presented.
I often have students with learning needs related to language barrier. I try to break down the words that are not understood and utilize other bilingual students in both translating, and helping the student understand that content.
George ,

I like the use of similarities to events that students do in their everyday lives. I also make use of comparisons to have students think about what we are attempting to learn.
Giving them specific examples of the meaning of words or a concept. I try to relate it to their country.
Identifying students learning styles is the best way that I have found to help them, even if they have special needs.
Going over vocabulary words verbally when they are introduced for the first time for those students who may have comprehension issues. Directing students with learning needs to the proper sources to help improve their cognitive ability. For example reading labs or math labs. Or even directing them to online sources which can help improve basic reading or math skills.
Woodrow,
yes, these stories are a great way to bring more abstract concepts closer to reality. Metaphors are great too!
