Giving students extra time is always helpful, but unless they have some sort of documentation indicating their needs, the instructors hands are tied.

Connie,
it does seem that the more avenues we can use to present the material, the more likely they are to learn the concepts.

I also offer "tutoring" sessions which are optional for all students. I like the idea of changing the name to Study Sessions" or Learning Sessions. There is definitely a bad connotation associated with "tutoring". One problem I have with these weekly sessions however is that there are attended primarily by the best students while the poorer students shy away. This may be due to the fact that the poor students are afraid to show their deficiencies in the subject. I am looking for a way to encourage the poorer students to attend.

Some strategies I have used in the past, have been utilization of flash cards and memory games. The students especially like the games that allow them to help each other. It also allows the students to understand that they may not be alone in their having difficulty.

Lulu,
I think this is a great approach to provide help they need in a private way.

Katherine,
this is a wonderful step to help her out. You may want to see if there are other services available that could provide her with some strategies she can use on her own to hel p her in future classes.

Austin,
yes, this is our opportunity to really demonstrate our willingness to work with these students & to truly help them.

I have not had experience with this, but it is interesting to read about other teachers input.

I typically will have the student sign up for tutoring with me. The one on one approach has worked well. The student isn't intimidated by other class members about their english.

a proficient provider teacher will implement and use all of (his or her ) working knowledge and skills. The use tutoring, special reading and writing assignments, vocabulary etc. you want to do everything that you can to help the student to be successful in your class.

I teach Diagnostic Medical Sonography and I have had students who litterally needed me to hold their hand and guide the ultrasound probe with them as they were scanning. This seems to be a good method to help develop eye hand coordination for those who are struggling with conceptualizing ultrasound images.

I have used a hands on approach. I will show them exactly what they need to make and just how to do it. this really helps to enforce the lesson.

I find that by using hand on application and repetition help them to grasp concepts long term.

I am a new instructor and have been teaching now for over a year. I recently had a student struggling with home work assignments. At first I thought that the student was not putting in the time or effort to complete the homework. I decided to sit down and have a conversation wtih the student about the homework. I opened up one of the Nursing Diagnosis books and had the student read a paragraph from the book. I realized at that moment she had a difficult time reading. I have been working with this student but it is very difficult. The student comes to my office on a weekly basis to review her homework and we discuss key concepts prior to meeting at the hospital.

I think it is important that you mentioned being supportive. Most of the time, the student already knows that they have a learning need and it is a stresser for them EVERY time they go into a new class with a new instructor. Being supportive and communicating that you are indeed supportive of their needs can be away to releive that stress early on for the student.

My strategies always start off by being patience and listening to my student. The student will be more than happy to explain what has worked for them in the past. Together we work out a plan of action and revaluate as needed.

First I would have to understand there way of learning and study habits. I will also be patient and try several different ways of teaching the students.

What has worked for me is usually asking students explain back to me what I’ve lectured to see in return what they understood to reply back on what they didn’t get.

taking concepts out of the "theoretical" and turning them into practical, "Hands-on" application...

this is perhaps easier to do in my field (film production) than in some others, as ALL theories have tangible, real-world practical application - but I think it important to remember that many non-traditional learners find it easier to understand theory by way of practice that vice-versa
