Reading aloud
As I attempt to learn more about my students academic abilities, I will often ask them to read a statement aloud to me in a secluded area so I can be sure they have adequate reading ability. Although I am a slow reader myself and often have to re-read passages to get it right, my comprehension and retention are excellent in the end. Is there any link between poor reading ability and hesitance to read aloud or are they separate issues?
I myself actually have Dyslexia and have struggled with reading aloud ALL my life! I tend to count what section or question I will have to read if we are going around the room and read it over in my head so I know the words correctly before I am asked to read infront of others. I myself have students read aloud BUT make sure they know they may skip to the next student if they do not feel comfortable.
I agreee with using others to read the assignment out loud. It helps us speak clearly and understand how important listening is in addition.
This can be a sensitive topic for people that do not feel confident in the their reading skills. To be asked to read a loud a lot of times the student will feel like they are put on stage or like an oral exam. Reading a loud can help others hear the way the word is spoken and also help with retaining the comprehension by someone else speaking. It is very powerful way of teaching to have other people speak.
