Instructors with Learning Disabilities
When we discuss diversity and the issue of ableism comes up in class, I find it important to let the students know that I have a learning disability and that as a child I was labeled LD gifted. My students already know that I have achieved my Bachelor's and Master's degrees as well as licenses as a notary public, a massage therapist, and an esthetician so they know that I have achieved a lot and let nothing stand in my way. I also explain to them that this is due to the fact that I was born deaf. This allows students to get a better understanding of learning disabilities in case they come across any learning disabled patients and also allows for students with learning disabilities to understand that they can accomplish anything they set their minds to do.
Hi Shantana!
What a very poignant real life scenario. It gives students an opportunity to have empathy and learn compassion as well as tell them all things are possible. As you read the many posts from students and course facilitators, have you given any thought to what instructors can really mean in the lives of students? It is an awesome opportunity and responsibility.
Keep up the good work!

I think this also opens their eyes to the fact that being labeled "LD" has nothing to do with how far you can go in life. You can serve as a wonderdul example to your students that anything is posssible.
Hi Jodi!
It fantastic that you are willing to self-disclose about your personal challenges. It obviously makes it more real for students who may be reticent to share their own needs. As you know, there is something about knowing that
"I'm not the only one" that helps us move forward.
Keep up the good work!
