a faulty motor because the circuit breaker is there to protect the wiring.

Students love to hear the stories or try to diagnose the problems we illustrate from the field.
I have students look at a refrigeration schematic, one they have studied extensively. I then ask to determine where in the system refrigerant will be evacuated from after performing a particular process which they will already have been taught to do.
Ashley,
This is a good example. If you were more specific, they would appreciate a more true-to-life question for a discussion.

You are working in a daycare or preschool classroom. A child comes in daily and seems to be hungry all the time. What actions should you take to care for the matter? and why? Where can you find help in the local community? How do you go about finding help in the local community for this child and his family? What is an appropriate manner for you to approach this matter with the child's parent(s)? Why?
Laura,
This is very good because it encourages critical thinking and also gives students opportunities to share some of their own knowledge.

Dennis,
It is hardly likely to have a class without diverse cultures anymore. This diversity brings so much more to our classes since we can learn how things are done in other cultures. It is important for us to ensure that everyone is on the same page when it comes to interpretation of material.

Chasity,
I also like interpretive questions because they challenge students. Students enjoy being challenged and often can give some interpretations that may be new to me. I like learning from students as well and I let them know that.
