We have various cultures with different language in our program. We encourage our students to speak slowly so all other students can interpret the same meaning of the question.
I agree with this reply, as an instructor, I find that interpretation questions allow the student to think outside of the box and rationalize there responses.. Question? A patient presents with a sensitive tooth but no obvious cavity. What diagnoses is suggested? A question like this one forces a student to become the patient, and Doctor. As the Dr.ask themselves probing questions, and as the patient offer clear answers... I love interpretation questions...
Tanya,
Great example! Is this a question that you use now?

Evaluate the graph presented. Do you believe that the company should continue to put money into this advertisement or should they seek out other options?
Dennis,
I have ound always found that asking questions is a good way to keep classes interesting.
Judy Mohammed
Yes. Often similar questions through out lab activities and class room discussion in practice of diagnosticthought process.
Dennis,
This is a very good example. Is this a question that you use in class?

A vehicle with a manual transmission has been towed to your shop with a shifting concern.
After inspection you find the transmission locks up in all gears except for third. What could be the cause?
Ezra,
This is an excellent example. Do you use questions often during your lectures?

In the physics-related topic of thermodynamics students learn that heat is a wasteful form of energy. An interpretive question related to this concept would be to ask students the following; If you placed your hand directly on a perfectly efficient running engine how would it feel? Please explain your answer.
Robert,
Great example of an application question. Do you use questions often in your lectures?
Judy Mohammed
Minerva ,
I have a similar issue teaching Sociology and I also explain on the first day how important it is to know and understand the society in which you live so that you may make a valuable contribution.

You are diagnosing a vehicle with a gasoline engine with a complaint of a rough idle. Your exhaust gas analyzer readings indicate high levels of hydrocarbons and very low carbon monoxide levels. Oxygen levels are higher than normal. Can anyone tell me some problems that could cause these readings?
Because I teach English Composition to Science students,on the first day of class I like to ask them why they think this course is a requirement of their curriculum. They often think it has nothing to do with their field of study until they are forced to think about the benefits of being good communicators. After they all have their say, we all agree everyone can improve his or her skills to help them in the workplace.
Gina,
Great technique! Do you use probing to guide them to the correct information when they seem stuck?
Judy Mohammed
I use something like "why do you think it's important to analyze your model's face before a makeup application?" This question is useful in determining a student's interpretation of the techniques I've taught them - seems to reinforce their knowledge and their confidence.
Kimberly,
This question is very thought-provoking and can lead to much discovery.

Johnny,
Good! Glad to see that you are challenging your students in other ways.

Based on the percentage of students who drop out of school during their first class, what factors do you think would play a role in this?
Thank you. :)
I do use this question, and questions like it, in class, as much as I can fit them in. A big part of my classes is technical, but there's still a lot of conceptual and analysis material that benefits from questioning like this.
