asking questions
by asking questions you can gauge how well your students are understanding the material you are covering. if, all the questions are answered correctly you can either move in new material or make your questions a little harder or more detailed so you better challege them.

I think that questions are not only a great way to asses how well your student understand what has been presented and learned, but can also be used to build interest when introducing a new topic. It can be used to keep students involved and less passive and push them towards active listening.
Louis,
This is very true. I am usually able to learn which parts of the curriculum need to be re-taught prior to developing the test.

Robert,
This is very true. I have always used questioning for the same reason.

I agree Jack by questioning you can gather information of what the students are learning or not. It is also a way to identify what they are not getting so you can redirect or re explain the question.
Leonardo,
You are quite right. It is a very important tool in the classroom. It stimulates critical thinking.

Short of a test, how else would you be able to gauge the amount of student understanding? Questions provide an insite into what information students understand, and what information has gone whizzing by them.
Questioning students not only helps an Instructor gauge a student’s understanding of that topic being covered but it also helps the Instructor understand if the his/her presentation is effective. Questioning not only helps students but is great feedback for instructors.
Timothy,
This is true and students appreciate interactive classes more than lectures.

Asking questions Is a better way of making sure the students understand what they are being taught.Keeps them on there toe's too.
i create a desk of 3x5 cards with all the students names on them, and when i have a question i pull a name from the deck of opertunity. no need to raise hands and this keeps them on their toes
Warren,
This is very true. You also have to understand the personality of your class since each class has its own personality.

Asking questions is something that has to be incorporated in your lesson plan and understanding the students learning styles is necessary and helps the instructor to chose which type of questions to use. Therefore it is important to use a variety types of questions. The better you understand your students the easier this becomes.
Steve,
This also helps you to discover what prior knowledge your students bring to the class.

Jim,
This is very true. Questioning does add a lot to the class and I have always found this method of teaching immeasurable.
Judy Mohammed
I like to ask there opinions on the subject matter to see how well my communication is working.
Questions are definately a great way to not only see what the students have retained or understand, depending on the question, but also a great way to keep the class envolved in the learning process. It creates a change of state and increases their attention each time a question is presented and especially if they are the one answering.
James,
So you do get to the middle at some point. Asking questions can also give you soem insight into students' prior knowledge.
