Asking questions

I usually asked a lot of questions in class either to get them involved or to test their understanding but one thing I always struggled with is the wait-time. Sometimes students will be quick to answer and sometimes the question is followed by a long silence.

ROBERT,

This is great classroom management. Keep it up!

While wait time maybe uncomfortable for the class or the instructor it’s important. It does show the student that he or she will be given time to think about the question and answer it, also it lets the student know that if they do not answer right away the instructor will not just move on. That the student will be held accountable for the information. I find myself moving around the class and using probing questions to nudge the student toward the right answer. Or there is always the game show technique where you ask the student if he would like a life line or to phone a friend.

Kristina,

Most teachers are uncomfortable using wait time at the beginning. I was. Students prepare more when they know that they will be held accountable and that teachers will wait for responses.

I feel that for me waiting is the hardest part, I feel if you wait too long the student starts to get nervous, or it might be I feel nervous for them. I like to use comparisons, like what would be the difference or an amalgam and composite set up? This way it helps to get more people involved to help with the correct answer. I am not good with statistics so that it my least favorite kind of of questioning. I think taking this course will truly help in my instructing.

Said,

I would say about three minutes. If the student needs help, I use probing or restating the question.

Generally speaking is there a timeframe for wait time?

Pascale,

I believe that most instructors struggle with wait time. It was also difficult for me, but it is important to use with students. It also helps them to be aware that they may be called upon and they would be given time to answer; it helps them to be prepared.
