Do not put any student on the spot by calling out their name and then asking them a direct question. Tell the class that you know they have questions and that I am looking for someone who wants to ask 1st.

Marvin,

I'm glad you got soemthing from the course. I often tell teachers that they would be surprised by what students can share when given the opportunities.

Judy Mohammed

Kelly,

I like to tease the students and answer questions with questions; however, I do realize sometimes that they need some straight answers.

Judy Mohammed

Diego,

You are correct, we must ensure that we use appropriate questions that relate to our lessons.

Judy Mohammed

After taking this course I realized during a review how effective the open questions are. Answers seem to come much more freely if I used not so direct questions but ones that also give the student an oportunity to explain thier answers. I noticed students are much more eager to share what they know when they have a chance to explain not just the answer. but how they arrived at the answer

You need to be asking question to the students all the time. The you ask the more they can understand but they need to be mostly open ended questions. Then I will ask a question from a question

Questions are the most common and effective tool we can use in class to follow up and keep the students engaged; the answers you will receive are only as good as the questions you are asking; don’t over use questioning as class room tool.

Alfredo,

Great advice! I usually plan appropriate jokes into the lesson to put everyone at ease.

Judy Mohammed

E.,

Great advice! It seems to me that those new instuctors have benefited greatly from your unsolicited advice. Keep up the excellence.

Charles,

This is most definitely very good advice.

First thing is to relax if possible because there is a lot of people staring at you,now relate to your topic as you know more than the people you are teaching. Explain the material and as you do format questions that would challenge the ones listening to see if you are coming across ok. Before you deliver the materisl stop for a minute and write down some questions in case you get too nervous. Focus on one person that your relating too, or is paying attention tooyou like some one you just bumped into and he need info.

I have offered my usually unsolicited advice to many new instructors. Regarding questions, I suggest that they get to questions sooner rather than later to actively involve the students.

Second, I caution them to never ask a question that's so easy it's embarrassing or condescending.

Third, I tell them to NOT answer their own questions. If the class learns that you're afraid of silence or wait time, they will never answer your questions because they know that you will do it for them. I let my students know two things. Silence doesn't scare me, and the sooner they answer the question the sooner we're done. That's usually enough motivation.

Get used to asking questions during lecture.
Use more open questions in the classroom.
Giving at least 3 seconds for a response.

Jonathan,

You are so right. Students remain more alert when they know you will be asking questions and the classes are more interactive. Most students state that they enjoy these classes more.

Judy Mohammed

Richard,

This is true. As teachers, we should employ all types of questions and challenge our students to employ their critical thinking skills.

Judy Mohammed

David,

It is very important for students to use critical thinking skills and, as teachers, we need to guide them to do so. Your technique is very much on point.

Judy Mohammed

I often ask questions during my teaching and I think it gets students more engaged and keeps the mind from wandering.

I would explain that questioning helps get your students more involved in the learning experience and will make it more productive for everyone.
