James,

This is very true. During the first classes, I use the roster to make sure that I call on everyone. This helps me to learn names as well.

Judy Mohammed

I sometimes stump the entire class with a question. When this happens I do 1 of 2 things. I pretend to answer it as a student changing my voice and saying "Mr. O'Neil the answer is XYZ" or I say to the class someone say "XYZ" and then priase whomever repeats the answer I gave them. Makes for a fun enviroment and gets the class interested into my explanation of the question that stumped them.

Make sure all students get to respond; don't just call on students who raise their hand. Also, make sure that the praise is consistent across all students. Students are turned off by a "pet".

Wayne,

This is an excellent technique to enhance students' learning. I do not like just giveing the answers; I feel they would retain more when they have research the answers.

Kerry,

This is very good advice. We always try to ensure that we keep the students' dignity. We should always be prepared and know the answers to our own questions, however, it is a good idea to let students know that we do not have all of the answers.

I have to totally agree Jeff, I always encourage students to take the part of the lecture in their classbook to lab with them,That is so that when they do ask qusetions instead of just giving them the answers I will usually give them a page number so that when they find the answer I'll have them to show me and then we will talk about it.

Samuel,

More teachers should understand the importance of questioning in the classes.

Daniel,

Your method seems to be great. It helps to make the class more interactive and keep more students engaged.

Eric,

This is excellent advice. We want to encourage more teachers to use questioning in their lectures.

Judy Mohammed

Denise,

This method of teaching challenges students to think critically and can only lead to better learning.

Louis,

Using the Socratic method of teaching (asking questions) challenges students to think critically. We want to encourage more teachers to use this method.

First be sure to give posative responses to incorrect answers IE: "well that's not exactly what we are looking for but your answer does make a good point" this is far better than simply saying your wrong.
Seconed make sure you know the answers to your own questions.
Third: Use a line of questioning that encourges critical thinking

always try to use open ended question to try and get the students to discuss the topic

I have tried to guide new instructors to incorporate both closed and open questions. I like to start with a closed question that will establish the subject of the discussion, and then ask simple open questions that will lead to more complicated ones. I think this causes the students to participate at all levels and allow them to learn more from each other.

1. Questions shoudl be used to set students up for success, not failure.
2. Only ask questions you know the answers to or... ask questions with no black and white answer and let the discussion bloom.
3. Dont always let the same student answer all the questions.

I would make sure the instructor understood how important effective questioning is to the classroom experience. I also would make sure that they were clear on the fact that a wrong answer is not a bad answer. That wrong answer is just a clue to you as the instructor that the particular concept in question was not presented in a clear way and a review is necessary. Whenever a student gives an incorrect repsonse...I always clarify or restate the question just in case it was the question that caused the confusion. This seems to have worked well for me in classroom management.

First thing i would be monitoring is the new instructor asking open or closed questions, second I would monitor if when the instructor ask's a question is he giving at least 3 seconds for a response to allow all to get a chance to answer, and Third I would be monitoring to see if the new instructor is responding with a form of leading questions to allow the student to think about there answer insted of just giving them a direct answer.

Rejandra,

Absolutely! I find it is one of the most challenging methods of teaching.

Judy Mohammed

would begin by suggesting that he or she get used to asking questions during lecture

Scott,

You are absolutely correct. I always let my students know that I do not have all the answers. I sometimes get them to research the answers.
