Stakeholders in the Flipped Classroom
How would you effectively communicate with all stakeholders included in a flipped classroom?
There are several stake holders in the flipped classroom, the instructor would let the students and parents know that by having a more hands on experience in the classroom where all the equipment is available. It provides immediate feedback to the students and more personalized education meeting each indvidual needs.
I would initially communicate with the stakeholders in a face to face manner as that is a familiar style for most. I would be sure to inform the participants that at first the flipped classroom would be used for a small percentage of the educational units and the students would have a chance to discuss not only the content of the lectures but also the flipped classroom style. I would then send examples of the 15 minute recorded lectures and quizzes to all stockholders.
My primary stakeholders would be the students and I think they would like the flipped format. I teach primarily IT classes and it would be very easy to implement; they would have much more in-class time to perform labs and hands-on activities that relate to the video topics.
Christine,
Good points. I think you have the stakeholder component down. You are also correct that critical thinkers are great employees.

Francisco,
The comparison is a good idea in order to give them a base point to work from.

Diona,
Good point to confirm the type of communication your stakeholders prefer - as long as the type chosen provides the information you want them to receive.

Diana,
Agreed. Providing evidence of success will be difficult for anyone to argue with.
Dr. Moody Crews
Joseph,
Great. A good introduction to anything new is a good idea.

In the career college environment, the stakeholders are the adult students, the teacher, the administrators, and the community. It would be important to explain to the students on the first day of class and throughout the course when they need encouragement that we learn best by doing. The instructor can give more individual help as students work and can answer specific questions as they arise. The administration can see all aspects of the course through the learning management system and can track the progress of the students. Administration can also review the quality of instruction more easily when it is posted online. The community is the body of potential employers of our students. Students who can think critically to solve problems on their own will be valuable employees. The employers will have the benefit of employees who know how to learn new material on their own and apply what they have learned to the project at hand.
I would clearly outline the benefits of the flipped classroom and compare them to the traditional setting. I believe that created a tangible document that is easily interpreted can immediately show their differences. When it comes to information on paper, I am generally very good at conveying a point.
I would make all lines of communication available, such as text, email and phone during appropriate hours. I would also make sure all stakeholders were comfortable communicating in these ways.
All stakeholders who have the interests of the students at heart would be an easy sell for this approach, including the students. I would present the long and short term benefits to all concerned but I would also give anecdotal evidence of the success in my classes.
Robert,
I agree. Showing them successful flipped classrooms will increase buy-in.

I believe that the students will require the most communication in discussing the effectiveness of the flipped classroom. Some students are hesitant to change. However, I believe the best way to approach students about implementing the flipped classroom is to relate it to what they will be doing in the work field. By reminding students that technology has become an essential aspect in almost all professions, utilizing technology in the classroom allows instructors to provide students with even more real world experiences that they may face in the work place.
I would start by having the first class date be all about how this style of teaching will work. I would also explain in person, or email to the parents how this teaching style will work and how this will make for more hands-on experience for the students, as the school I teach at is a tech school.
I would focus on student learning- hands-on activities in the classroom that are still facilitated by the instructor, and point them to successful flipped classrooms.
Erica,
Very true. I agree that change can be difficult and you are correct, if the stakeholders have a good understanding of the program and the benefits offered, success is much more likely.
Dr. Moody Crews
Jeff,
That's great. I would love to hear how things progress.
Dr. Moody Crews
Change can be difficult in any organization. It is important to ensure everyone is fully aware of the program and it's intended benefits. I find it also helpful to do this even before implementation. When stakeholders feel they are apart of the process, change is easier to implement.
