We will send students on field trips to locations and facilities that use the technique that we employ in or labs. The students see the construction of aircraft before they read about it or even see it in a power-point presentation. This generated questions that they get answers to during F2F class time.
Soneka,
I think those are good ideas. Depending on the subject, I require my students to interview experts in the subject area.

Diane,
You are correct, we are hearing some great ideas.
Dr. Moody Crews
Markia,
That's an excellent point. This way you are hitting on more than one learning style.

I am a big proponent of library research which I believe allows students to build on their information search skills. I would assign them some things they would need to research somewhere else, online or through verbal inquiry. This would help reinforce the information and provide speaking points for the F2F.
I think all of the ideas here are great ideas of bringing in current topical relavant and related connections that the students make to the learning. They can experience the learning first hand, and certainly show the facilitator something new! This can be encouraged and welcomed so that it breeds the teamwork, learning, real world experience that we are all in this process together.
Diane
just after the online training session, the student should go and find or do something related to the subject one has learn or I feel they will just forget or don't care
I try to encourage students at home if they can see or touch a item in the house maybe in the family room, bedroom, kitchen even the garage!
Beverly ,
These are all wonderful ideas. Good job of thinking outside the box.
Dr. Moody Crews
Jean,
These are all great ideas. Have you thought about some less traditional activities that students could do outside the classroom. Reading, outlining, listing, etc. are all fine tools but think about some more experiential things that students might be able to do. They could still bring that learning experience into the classroom to discuss and share with other students.
Dr. Moody Crews
Richard,
I really like the draft idea. Learning should not be an all or nothing experience. The idea is for students to learn and grow - but not necessarily all at once.
Dr. Moody Crews
Nicole,
Pulling teeth without anesthesia - great analogy. Time management is a real problem for many people and something I suggest to many students that they should seek help in dealing with this issue.
Dr. Moody Crews
Jason,
These are all great ideas. Have you tried any of these with your students?
Dr. Moody Crews
Katie,
Good thoughts. Have you thought about how you might not only combine different activities but how you might also switch up the way you use these activities in your classroom.
Dr. Moody Crews
Nathan,
How true. I am always amazed at what I learn personally when students discuss what they learned in current literature. You are correct, it is a form of professional development for the instructor.
Dr. Moody Crews
Other than pre-recorded videos, students could:
Research specific subjects and/or concepts
Attend workshops and seminars
Visit local museums or other sites that would present valuable information pertaining to a specific subject
-Reasearch articles for reading and outline them
-Read the newspaper and make a list of important points on a subject
-Read the chapter and take notes
Watch a movie/DVD on the subject and report to class and be prepared to discuss
Yes, I too utilize the journals as a source for integrating knowledge and bringing fresh information into the course for me.
As students receive the assignment to go search out similar topics that interest them in published journal articles, they come back having learned and integrated more material, think critically as they observe the experimental model and answer questions about the topic for their peers, and develop an understanding of the importance of the research process.
The added bonus for me - professional development. I get to learn new things as they learn as well!
For strategy courses, I have students create a "draft" of a strategic plan section prior to class. It forces them to put ideas on paper and apply what they've learned. But, by calling it a draft, students feel that they have the opportunity to improve during the class session. After class, they can work on revising the section before developing the next one for the upcoming week.
At my college the students do all of their GE online It is like pulling teeth without anesthesia to get them to sit down and actually do the lessons. The students have an extremely hard time prioritizing their time when faced with distractions outside of the classroom. For my students I think the implementation process has to start with them generating the "homework" portion. For example, having them find applicable videos at home, then showing them in class. I would also have them explain the learning points in their own words. I feel like having them explore mixed media lessons online will foster more curiosity and excitement as they will be eager to share what they found with their classmates.
Wikis and interactive graphic lessons, built with software like Captivate, would be a great addition. Wikis are collaborative text documents that multiple user can contribute to and edit. Interactive graphic lessons, like those used in these online courses, provide short video and audio lessons punctuated with interactive activities.
