Learn by Seeing
It is so important that as culinary instructors we teach our students by demonstration. We now know why-students only retain 25% of the information they hear, yet 40% of the information they see.
Donald,
This is a very effective way to teach developmental skills. This way the students get to see relevance and then make application. This greatly increase the retention of content and motivation.

I teach a healthcare class that requires a lot of hands on techniques to be effecient at the workplace. It benefits the student to watch a demonstration and then immediately practice that skill before leaving class. This helps the student retain the information with the knowledge of the task and the eye/hand coordination mechanics.
Richard,
Thank you for sharing this example of how multiple presentation formats increase content retention. Seeing something greatly enhances the making of connections between cognitive retention and practical application.

I really agree with this,I have seen this when a teach my students anatomy and physiology and Medical terminology also,if I draw the diagram on the board, and show to them the differents organs of a body system and I ask them to label it on the board but also I give them one to label ,and before starting the next class I give the same diagram to label in 2 minutes ,they still remmember 80%of them
Cece,
Good point. The more senses and cognitive avenues we can get the students to use the higher the content retention rate is going to be. In addition, their skills sets will expand as a result of the "hands on" work they get to perform.

I agree with Massage Therapy at McCann students retain more when they are shown a demonstration instead of reading a sequence of that practical application.

demostration is in my openione is the best method to teach the students and to let them learn especially when teaching a student any practical profession, they may memorize the information but when asked to apply it practically he oshe can not apply it because he did not see it, it just like teaching a medical student to do operation to a patient ,he may be able to describe the step of the operation but he can not perform the operation because he did not see it done.
I do beleive that most students learn better by seeing or better yet by hands on experience. As an instructor of adult students, I have found this to be true.
Robert,
I like the way you put what the students are getting out of their learning. "Test driving their knowledge."

The new information in the students minds, wants to go for a test drive.
