I use the white board and can draw very well.I have their attention right out of the gate.I then lecture and use the white board as I go.I pass around training aids that support the lesson plan I am teaching.the written and auditory works well, the kinesthetic and visual when they get to lab just outstanding.
Our program has been developed to include all four learning preferences. As was mentioned in the module, there are students that dont like to do one way or the other, but by presenting material in all formats, it gets through to them more completely, possibly without them realizing it. Students may not prefer one way, but to cover everyones preferences, this is the way we give the material.I believe this is why we are successful.
As already stated by other instructor we are fortunate that the curriculum we use at our school supports all four of the learning preferences.
I have a couple computer based training topics that appeal to the written and/or auditory learners.
The lectures and reviews with PowerPoint appeal to the auditory and visual learners.
The kinesthetic learners do best when we perform the lab tasks.
I also use all four learning styles in my class to address all the students learning styles. The two most popular are the Kinesthetic and visual. I feel you need to draw the students in. Some find it diffcult to what a power point and bookwork but the hands on in lab really ties things together for all the learners.
In my courses I try to hit on all the learning styles. Because we are in an automotive school it is my opinion that most of our students learn by the kinesthetic way of learning. This is not to say that I do not try to use different leaning styles. Our course is set up do be delivered in such a manner that we hit all learning styles. We do online training as well as class lectures and finally, hands on.
I try to use all four finding that hands-on seems to help my students the most, along with real-life experience.
i try to use all four, in most cases you can show, you can talk, you can give written, but the best success is hands on. i can ask all the questions that you can think of, and give all the written materialin the world, but all in all they like it better when they are shown and then they get their hands on it and go to work!
The courses that I teach are set up in such a way that the student gets exposed to all 4 types of learning so each can benefit from each although most students have learning preference very few are just one style.
I find that written and then hands on seems to work best for me. Buut in the long run i am willing to say in one form or another we use all four in our daily teachings.
I lecture, hand out components to show what the lecture means, written handouts from the manufactures about the subject matter, ask questions about the subject matter, reading referenceson subject ,and apply in hands on lab.
I have found that auditory along with written in conjunction with visual gets the students ready for the lab tasks and also help generate questions for further discussion.
I like to change the way the subject is communicated to help each of the learning groups.
And I work at doing this in each section or Chapter of the course.
Tim,
This is so true. Students like to see application and relevancy in what they are learning. This approach helps them to see both as they work through problems.
Gary
Since our classes are more hands-on based we tend to use visual and kinesthetic styles. In a software environment it seems to work best. When I try to implement a written style to the education it seems to turn them off.
The strategies that work the best for my class is the Participation in class discussions. this keeps then engaged and intrested what we are learning. The other one that works is the self study. my students see value when they read something and then we go over it the next day.for my Visual learners drawing on the board or going out to lab to look at subject helps a great deal. and finally to go out and talk it apartand see what makes it tick really brings it all together.
James,
I agree with you about how these strategies enhance the learning of students. Good way to get them engaged and focused on learning.
Gary
i try to use them all during a course and combine them when i can (i.e., audtory and visual)this way i think it helps to strengthens learners abilities in other areas of learning but stills addresses thier preference.
John,
This is a powerful combination because it engages the students in two different ways and this reinforces their learning.
Gary
I like using the combo of visual and auditory. Tell how it works and the test to insure that it works. Then have the student show how the test works. What works the best is when I can use all (auditory, written, visual and kinesthetic).
In are setting we are in we use a lot of kinesthetic learning but there is also a blend of the auditory, visual and the written. Not all students lean by the same learning process and some require a combination of two or three so we offer all ways for a student to obtain the information and knowledge.
