Guided Note Taking

I have done this with my students for a few years now, and I did not even know it had a name! I find it keeps the students interested to find out what goes in the blank.

Charles,
You may want to expand your outline a bit so that you are only sharing the major topic points and then the students are to fill in the critical content. This way they have to be engaged in the lecture/demonstration process and can't just rely on the guided notes highlights that they have been given. This introduces more accountability to them.

I find that when using guided notes or cueing students to "highlight", several students will study only those notes and neglect the rest of the lesson. I feel as if I am "teaching the test".

Khalid,
Good way to help the students to see the value of the point you are making and "burn" it into their memory bank.

I have used this method for years ,once i reach something important ,i ask my students to high light it ,underline it,and leave the students to choose the method that help them to recode the important information.

I think giving students guided notes are an excellent learning tool. By helping students with guided notes,a great number of students relize how well they preform on an exam.

I agree, keeping the students involved during lecture, is great. Keeping them active.

Jessica,
Thank you for the comments about guided notes. Many students as you know lack study skills and guided notes helps them to capture the essential information of that class.

I, too have been using this technique for awhile now, and I have found that students prefer it to just being given a completed outline (passive). These are also much easier to prepare in a word processor than to prepare text in a powerpoint file.

By giving students a guided outline, they have an organized version of the content that already helps them to discriminate between critical and supplemental information. You can also leave blank sections in the outline to have students draw a graphic organizer under descriptive text. For example, you can have text describing the components of a feedback loop and then draw them in a cycle diagram underneath the text.
