Student Fears

We do get a lot of age diverse students in classes and I see the fear in the older students. I think it is a joy to work with such a range of personalities and ages. It makes the real life stories interesting for the younger students and the older students enjoy hearing stories from the younger ones. I feel that most of the time in working together, the older students fears are gone after a few hours of getting to know the class.

Hi Roger,
Had those students as well. They forget the real reason why they are taking the class. I have to calm them down and help them to see the reason for the class and when they do they do better and with that goes a reduction in concern for their loans because they are making the grades needed.

Another student fear is those who need a certain GPA to keep their tuition financing, and when they get a low score on an assignment it really rattles them.

Hi Michelle,
The diversity of ages is interesting in career colleges. Older learners may fear that they are too old to be starting in school and wonder if they have the skills that younger learners bring forward. (e.g. technology skills - older learners may be less adept with our online learning formats).

Younger learners, are at times quite impatient wanting to speed through activities and assignments. I need to be measured in my rsponses. It seems that instant messaging (IM) is used in place of opening up the book or researching for a correct answer for a question.
