you are so right! Those "Aha" moments are the best particularly when I've been working after class with a student who is struggling to grasp the concept and then suddenly "Aha". Moments like that are just the best for my student and myself.

Kevin,
This is a good method because it lets students use their newly acquired knowledge via application. This reinforces their retention of not only the content but the skill development as well.

When I was in school, i learned best when the instructor lectured me on the procedure, then "shadowed" me as I performed it, then turned me loose to perform it myself. I have seen that methodology work well with alot of my students, so I am using it to a great extent in my classes.

Susan,
Immediate use of newly acquired knowledge is a valuable learning tool. It shows the students the relevance of what has just been taught and how it can be applied.

Students I find like learning in theory and then go to clinical to apply there knowledge

Wendy,
Students like change of pace and variety in their instructional delivery. You are sharing the same message over and over but through different venues. This helps to keep the students engaged yet offers them the needed repetition.

Like a lot of other instructors taking this class, I like to use repetition. But, I try to vary the mode of the material being repeated. Reading the text is one type, using a PowerPoint presentation a second, discussion a third, etc. I also like to ask students if they can think of a way in which they will use the new skill in their jobs - and to share it with the rest of the class.

Mary,
This light coming on is what keeps many of us coming back to the classroom or lab over and over again. It is such a wonderful moment when it happens because that student has gained some knowledge or a skill that will be with him or her for the rest of their life.

It is so rewarding when you see the "light" come on in a student's eyes about the subject you are teaching. Finding ways to relate it to "real life" scenarios I have found is a very effective way to help them understand it.

I think I try to encourage students to relate material as much as possible. When they see the concepts brought to life outside of the classroom I believe that helps then in their ability to retain information. Applying will come once they have taken it from just memory and into real life scenarios for instance.

Shronda,
Don't understand what you are saying about this topic. Will you expand on this?

open your mind

Lorraine,
Immediate use of newly acquired knowledge is a way to greatly enhance the retention of content. Students really like this approach as it increases their ROI in relation to course effort.

having immediate practice problems to try, and then reinforce the information through homework and testing.

Kyle,
You are helping the students to go from theory to application with your approach. This really increases their retention of the content as well as expands their skill development. A win win for everyone.

In automotive climate control I always look for something they can hold and take apart after they've heard about what makes it tick. Then I have them identify what they've taken apart to reinforce their newly acquired skills.

Jacqueline,
Repetition is a powerful learning tool that can be used in many different ways. So the more engaging we can make the repetition effort the greater the retention of the content is going to be.

Eric,
What are some ways you connection your course content to their career field in a relevant and applied way?
Gary

Hands on is a good way to help student retain the information and letting them see how the information is relate to the career field.

Repitition is great for students. Some students might need it more than others.I try to go over previous class discussions, so they will be reenforced with the topic and able to grasp on to the new info. Plus I try to make sure they have some understanding of the topic before we move on to the next.
