I teach in the apparel production field. Having them work on the skill that was just introduced to them allows them to put to test the concept that was just introduced. It also gives me a chance as an instructor to go through the room and look at, correct, compliment, encourage, or further explain what they need to be doing.

Rigt after a lecture we go to lab and have hands on so it helps put two and two togather.

What resources do you have to help maintain memorization courses?

to be able to expound on the information, and apply new information with hands on training

Hi Meighen,
Right you are about providing opportunities for students where they get to apply their newly acquired knowledge in different settings. These different approaches enable the students to see how the material can be applied in a number of different problem solving applications.

One good way to help students retain and apply new information is by giving students ways to manipulate the information. Finding a way to help the students use the information hands-on increases the probability of retention. Another way to help students retain and apply information is by assigning students to teach subjects. By doing this the student is developing a deeper understanding of the content of that subject.

One of the ways I help students retain and learn new inforamtion is through repeativeness. By repeating the material over they begin to learn the information. I also have them do exercises that help them apply the new information. I try to keep the exercise relating to real life appilications.

Hi Michael,
This delivery helps to reinforce content with increased retention. This way the students can pull the information from their working memory when they are out in the work world.

I teach at a culinary school. We believe in demonstration, immediately followed by practical application. First, show the students how it's done, and then allow them to do it under supportive observation with constructive feedback.

Hi Phonesavanh,
This helps the students to get settled into the course and ready for the upcoming learning opportunities. Also, the games to be used as review tools to cover the previous class's content as they prepare for the knowledge and skills they will acquire.

Sometimes we play games at the beginning of class to review previous concepts or introduce a current event news story that ties into last class' lecture. I find that this is a great way to begin class and get everyone settled in and focused on the subject matter for the day.

You help them by having interesting classes everyday. You are the key to the learning process you must feel good about what you are teaching and what you want them to learn. Your attitude can rub off on your students.

Start out with information or an environment which is familiar to them. Students feel more comfortable when they can relate new information to something that they already know.

After they have been introduced to the new information, you can apply the information to situations that the students might be familiar with. I have found that this works very well in my Business Math class with items that students might upon as consumers.

You can also apply information to job-related situations or simulations.

I use case studies. Case studies, like the "red phone" example from module 3, help students apply what they are learning by solving a problem.

Each chapter of the text book that I use begins with a case study to focus learning. In class, we spend the majority of our time working with those case studies. Typically, I also find current events that mimic the case studies in the book, which helps create by-in by connecting content to student's perception of the real world.

Using videos and "Youtube" to support a topic or subject matter has work well.

Hi Laura,
Variety is a key ingredient in learning. You are using variety to keep students engaged in the learning process. Keep up the good work.

I feel like you have to find something applicable to your group of students. This might be references to movies or television, use of manipulatives, games based on clinical scenarios, etc. I also teach students to "file" their ideas in their head. I encourage them not to think of everything as new, because it is not. They simply need to reorganize when they add new knowledge. It is also important to teach simple to complex, which can be difficult for teachers who have known something "as long as they can remember" so they don't remember what the newness was like.

I have had success with students retaining information, by constant repetition and daily applying of the knowledge gained throughout the course. I usually do this with games, word search and group discussions.

Application on knowledge in very important for students. Sometimes its hard to implement this in certain classes. Educators have to seek out additional resources to make this happen.

When I have a lot of new information to present to students I will break it down into segments. I will do a lecture on one subject at a time. Then give a demonstration of the information that was covered in the lecture. Immediately after the lecture and the demo I give the students hands on time to practice what they just learned.
