pre-test as a form of motivating, relating to students
It is difficult to overestimate motivating or relating to students.
In the first class it make sense to have pre-test to find out their level, adjust study plan, and to measure success of teaching process.
How it may be used also to motivate students or help instructor to relate to students?
I love pre-tests! In case you haven't used it in the past, I utilize the website surveymonkey. It allows you to create a quick survey and send off to your students even before your first class meets. It's a great way to give them an idea of what sort of topics you'll be covering before the class starts and helps you focus on where they need most help.
Hi Alvina,
I give a pretest as well. The results really help me to develop my instructional strategies to meet the needs of my current students. Another plus is at the end of the course I can show them how far they have come by comparing their knowledge and skills with their pretest results.

I've started to give a pre-test and have received positive feedback from students. The pre-test provides students an overview of the material that will be covered.
I have used pre-testing to give me a baseline as to how I will need to progress with the course material at hand. I also have the student write a short essay as to why they choose the course and what they are hoping to gain while completing the course.
This is a very good idea! A pre test is a good way to find out where the students are in their learning it. To encourage participation I go around the room and each student takes a turn at answering the pre test questions they are not graded so those that may not readily volunteer get a chance to engage when they are called upon this could be a good way to motivate students especially when the answer correctly.
I also like to give a Lab Pretest to keep students motivated, letting them know that by the end of the quarter they will have learned all of these topics & know the answers.
I always have the students write there goals on a sheet of paper and keep them until the end of the term, you can learn alot about a student by the goals they set for themselves
