Jose,
You are doing two things that really get students engaged. By helping them to see the relevancy of the content while giving them practical applications you are enhancing their perception of the value of the course and why they are in school.

Sherry,
This is such a powerful way to connect to students. Knowing they are valued is critical and you are doing such by learning their names early in the course.

Michelle,
A good balance in the teaching and delivery effort. This is how instruction should be offered to students so they will be engaged and focused.

I try to show my students real examples to make the material relevant to them. Doing that they can see for themselves how the teaching material will be relevant in their coming career. Also, I try to create an interactive environment to encourage student participation.
I try from day one of class to remember their names, it is a feeling to them that there instructor is taking the time to remember each student which makes them feel as though they are important
I feel what keeps students is to have them engaged, and really taking learning from a different preception. meaning show them the way. explain to them the pros and cons, and really make learning a fun enviornment.
Sarah,
Good strategy because timely and frequent feedback helps students to continue to make progress in the course.

I usually give their test papers back the same day. To motivate them to keep doing well and for those who did not do well, we work on their weaknesses.
Della,
Strategies like this are valuable in helping the total student to develop. You are not only sharing content but are also helping them to develop in their social, emotional and self discipline areas as well. Keep sharing those quotes!

I like a lot of the techniques and ideas I have read here. One of the techniques that I use is posting a motivating quote or idea on the board in the classroom each week. I leave it there for a week. I have each student to tell the class their "take" on the idea or quote. For example, my idea this week is one of my own which is something to the effect of we all have the POWER to use our troubles as stumbling blocks or as stepping stones...which will you chooose? I also use quotes by others who are successful, writers, and well-known educators. Sometimes I give them points on tests and quizzes if they are keeping a journal of the quotes and can take it out and write the quote for whatever week I ask for.
Mike,
I use guest speakers a lot in my classes as well. You are right because by sharing their experiences they help to make real the content that is being studied in the course. My students as I am sure yours are are always pumped after one of our guest speakers.

One of the best motivation techniques that I have found is having guest speakers that are potential employers in the field of study. To have someone besides the instructor stand in front of the class and speak about the field and expectations of employers is a very useful tool to back up the facts that you are giving them throughout their program.
Brandon,
Good ways to reinforce what you are teaching. The more real life applications they can make and the more role models the hear from the better engaged the students are going to be. Experiences like that help them to see themselves out in the workplace providing quality patient care.

ROBIN,
I am a big fan of games myself. I use them a lot during review sessions. We play Family Feud and Jeopardy. We have a lot of fun and the students are amazed at how much they actually know that they didn't think they know.

Kevin,
This is what a learning leader should be about. We need to make sure we model our expectations. This way our students can see how they can develop into sought after professionals.

Number one thing in my book would be “applying real life situations and providing motivation speakersâ€.
If a student can hear and be involved with motivation in their career i found it will help the student to continue going to college
Since I teach in healthcare, (most) of my students are in the field because they like to help take care of the sick. (Caring hands)
Also, a lot of healthcare providers has helped someone in the past or know someone that has a chronic condition and found interest in learning more about the condition
Sometimes playing games in class and offering a few bonus points on an assignment or the next exam can help students be motivated. It brings out competitiveness in some students and makes them work harder to stay ahead of the others (to earn those extra points).
Hi Ricardo,
Yes. The effort to learn names is so important. I know this has been covered in other trainings, but it is so important to reiterate that. I-n learning their names, we are beginning real conversations with them.
I find valuing student input and demonstrating an ability to be flexible helps with motivation. In addition, demonstrating through both actions and words your commitment to their success.
Effective motivation techniques are decided somewhat by the students personality and needs during each course. Making sure the student receives praise and encouragement throughout the course.
