Ask frequent questions during a lecture to get the students involved and to solicit their opinions.

Depending on the subject matter, the direct application of the information seems to energize the students to see the reality of the learning material. In my line of work, the nursing student or coding student enjoy the direct application and the execution of tasks, when they achieve the correct response, you see the light bulbs above their heads. It is very rewarding for me to observe.

Hi Beth,
What are some some strategies you use to get your students working together in learning groups or on case studies.
Gary

Hi Donna,
This is what relevancy is all about. You are showing and sharing with them the value of a comprehensive education. This helps them to see what they are studying as being important and beneficial to their career goals.
Gary

Learning that requires interaction with the students, make them active participants.Keep their attention and help them retain what they learn.

I love to share my sucesses with the students to show them how many different fields they can go in just though this one class.

Hi Dennis,
Students do bring a lot of life experiences to the class and we need to take advantage of those experiences. Also, students have more confidence when they know their life experiences are valued.
Gary

Allowing the students to share their own relative experiences and then relating them to my own past experience seems to really help. Students love to feel part of a group and see how thier current training can lead them to reach future goals.

Hi Ross,
Guest speakers and field trips are powerful motivators for students. These experiences help make real the course content you are sharing with them.
Gary

Hi Travis,
This is a great way to show respect for your students since you want to know about the life experiences they are bringing into the class. In addition, it helps their self confidence because they realize that as a result of their life experiences they have something to contribute to the course.
Gary

Hi Debra,
This is true plus it shows value by you to the students. When they get to share their life experiences you it demonstrates that you are welcoming them into the class and that their life experiences will be integrated into the course.
Gary

Share experiences and have quess speakers for their career field share stories to emphthem asize the importance of the course material. Take field trips to places of their chosen career fields to show the students the information being introduced in class is relevant and important to their success.

I ask each student to share a life experience that pertains to the topic at hand. This allows them to teach other students and myself about their past knowledge and what got them motivated to learn.

It seems to be helpful to have the student share life experiences. It makes the class feel united.

Debra

Hi Shaun,
Great to hear. Your excitement will help the students to get excited and motivated about what they are studying.
Gary

i really enjoy being excited for my students, and it has worked great for me.

Hi Sandy,
This is a good way to check for understanding and to reintroduce the concept as the student explains his/her understanding so the class has heard it twice, once from you and once from the student. This really helps with content retention.
Gary

When I am explaining a new concept and a student in the class understands the concept quickly; I usually will invite that student to explain their understanding of the concept. Sometimes a student will create an easy recall technique and I will also request the student to share their finding with the class. The more positive energy I bring to the class the better the outcome for the students.

grades....feedback..but not C) Work under pressure and problem solve

Have the adult learner take a background experience and relate how the lecture or class material could have or was used in that situation. If the experience discussed had a poor outcome, have the student describe how the course material could have resulted in a better outcome.
