Hi Rebecca,
I use them to. They are great and with some many there are always several that I can apply to my lesson if I want to.
Gary

Hi Louise,
I really like the way you bring reality into the classroom. Sometimes students get so caught up in the field, like preparing innovative dishes that they forget so of realities of life. The restaurants that have failed health inspections are great examples. This is real and current and something when they have their kitchens they cannot overlook. Should make a lasting impression on them.
Gary

Alowing the students to think about ways, and share how they will apply the skills to help them in achiving their goals seems to get a spark.

Hello,

I agree. Students always learn better when they can make a personal connection.

Hello,

Allowing students to have some input in the creation of assignments is one way to motivate students. Also, taking note of their interests early on is another way to motivate students. For example, I ask students to share some of their favorite authors with the class. I might incorporate some readings from these authors during the semester.

Some examples of effective motivation techniques that career college instructors can use are:
1.Praise students who make comments and ask questions. This type of "reward" can motivate others to participate also.
2.Give students who listen and participate small tasks that raises their status in the class.

I use Youtube clips sometimes to start class. It is a good icebreaker, shows something that is current and they can relate too, and there is always something interesting available to view.

I use various methods, depending on the course and the topic.

I always try to tie "real world" situations to the topic. Sometimes using the "don't do this" idea works -- for example, a local television station names local restaurants that failed health inspections, and why they failed. We discuss the various infractions and what should have been done to avert the problems.

Using casestudies in the book as a guideline, I have students take the roles of customer/business to see how they would react to a situation at their establishment. Using stories from papers of situations from other areas also works.

Hi Jennifer,
I am sure your students really enjoy being in your classes. Your excitement is catching and helps to motivate the students to achieve success in their studies.
Gary

This was a great module! It was interesting to learn more about methods to further motivate students. One of the best ways I believe we can motivate students is showing the “real world” connection with the course material. I also find that students are much more excited about learning when the assignments are written in a way that mirrors a task they might receive from the boss at work. When they see the relevance of the material and/or the assignment they are motivated to learn and do well on the assignment. This helps them to see their success on the assignment can help them succeed at work.

Prompt feedback (and substantive feedback) is another way to motivate. Students work hard on their assignments and deserve detailed feedback that clearly shows what they have done well, and what may benefit from additional review. Additionally, the feedback should be timely as that further motivates.

My own enthusiasm for the material is another way to motivate for students. I truly have a passion for the concepts and eagerly share my industry experience. Additionally, I love using animations and fun visuals to further “energize” the classroom. Learning should be fun!

There are several things to keep in mind when
motivating your students. The behaviors we
reward or encourage will often be repeated.
Encouragement should always be given and
may stimulate a person to do good. In order to
motivate the instructor must have a specific goal
or objective in mind that he or she wants to
achieve. The instructor must remember what
motivates one student may not motivate another.

A motivated student is one that shows an eagerness to learn, is alert, pays attention to
what is being discussed and participates in the
discussion.

life experience is key i agree. career college students have lots of it and love to share. and it is nice to use as a building block for the learning.

Positive reinforcement through supportive class participation.

One-on-one encouragement.

Self- efficacy training.

I totally agree, students recognizing application and use of material is an excellent reinforcer

Hi Gregory,
Right you are. These students have specific career goals in mind and are motivated to achieve them. They want to get involved in the learning process as quick as possible and move right through the course. They are a pleasure to teach due to the motivation level.
Gary

Adult students that attend career training can be motivated by things like guest speakers in their career field. They can also be motivated by field trips to dealerships where they can view the operationa and get a realistic look at their future work environment. In the classroom you can use group learning activities and presentations. Things like demonstrations set up for the students to participate in is also a good motivator. Really anything that can get them out of their chairs and using the hands seems to work well.

Hi Santiago,
Good way to start the class. High energy and excitement helps to engage the students and move them forward in their education. It is a performance just as you say so we need to be "on" each time we enter the classroom.
Gary

Every time the bell rings, I think to myself, "Its Showtime". When the curtains go up, its all about putting on a great performance. The positive energy that I possess often transmits to my students. Therefore creating a positive learning environment and break down the learning barriers that may of been present is a good way of starting things off.. It does not always work out like that, but its always a good way to start the class.

Hi Claire,
I really like guest speakers as well. They reinforce what we are telling the students in class as well as getting them motivated to keep putting forth the effort to be successful.
Gary

After we discuss the subject matter in the classroom we go to lab, and I show them the componet, what it does, and how to test it. Then I have them do the same work. If after that the student still does not understand, I will try another way to explain it, then show it again. Most students will catch on if explained correctly, and they have fun working on things themselves. This will reinforce that they can do it, which will is an effective motivation technique.
