motivation of students using their life experiences
encourage participation and discussion of relevant life experiences to the course objectives
Tim,
Sounds like a most enjoyable discussion that benefited everyone in your class. Your students got to see and learn about the value of the content you are sharing with them in a course that may not be seen as being tied directly to their field of study.

A master instructor will be able to facilitate an effective discussion based on learners prior experiences or the examples they bring to class. In one of my psychology classes, for example, I used a student's dreams to talk about latent and manifest content of a dream. The discussion was more interesting to students when a member of the class told about her dream and we were able to use it as a learning tool to help students remember these Freudian concepts.
