An example of motivation I use as a career college instructor is sharing my personal experiences I have had in the field. Always remember that each student may be motivated in difference was so many techniques need to tried.
Jenny,
Good strategy. Students really like to know their most current status in a course so the more you can provide that the more the students can chart a success course for themselves.

Claudette,
I use these methods in my classes with great results. They are a good way to get students engaged in the learning process.

I give out frequent progress reports helps to motivate students to improve their grade. this helps students who may be in danger of not passing the course get their grade up before the end of the semester. It also helps students who want to improve their letter grade or motivate the A students to keep doing what they are doing.
Career college instructors can create a game out of the career contect being taught. Students learn from games and it also helps them retain. Role playing always works as it gives the students the ability to feel like they are actually in that role.
Francisco,
So true. Examples from the "real" world help to reinforce the value of the content. The students can get a mental picture of how they will soon be working in the field and having success much like the stories you share with them.

Rosemary,
Students really like stories about the field. By weaving them into the lectures you get to reinforce the content and increase the value of it to the students.

- Examples of real life situacions applicable to what they have learn
- The power of knowlodges can make a diference on their personal lifes
you can motivate students by sharing with them the experiences you have in the field and asking them when they get out there to please come and share their experiences with you. I feel it makes them feel like they are part of the teaching experience and it motivates them to be the best they can be so they can come back and share with you
Share personal experiences in the field with students, the positive and not so positive.
Make use of hands on activities.
Invite guest speakers in to offer different points of view.
Invite students to participate in discussions, use groups to present short lessons.
I like to use real life situations to make the class interesting...
For me effective motivation techniques is keeping the classroom just like the workplace. So the student gets a real workplace feel.
Using games to help with learning and sometimes earning prizes.
Michelle,
What are some successful ways you do this?

Offering positive feedback.
Michael,
Good way to bring out the reality of going through a training program. You are showing your students that you have experienced the same things they are going through and by working through them you are the success you are today. You are a role model for them to follow.

Mark,
I agree. I use the same strategy. I always go into class with a few of these items ready to go should I need them if the class starts to drift away from me. They are my always ready Plan B.

I have drawn on my failures in my career as a field tech, due to the lack of knowledge and the inexperience of the people that I apprentised with. Taking that one step further, I also explained that maybe I was playing the adulecent and only wanted to listen to what I wanted to hear instead of hearing what was being said.
I find the use of handouts, group activities and "brain teasers" to be helpful. It is always good to use these when the students start to get overwhelmed with material and to "take a break" so to speak.
Roberta,
Great to hear. I wish you much teaching success.
