Have to stay conected to the students needs.
\
try to encourage them daily
Nancy,
You got that right! Having graduates speak to current students shows them the value of the content that is being taught as well as the fact that if they put forth the effort they can have the same success.

Yes, some of my (and my students) favorite classes are the ones where graduates come back and talk about the career field and how valuable their education was! This is a major student retention boost!
Elena,
I use former students as guest speakers in my classes for the reasons you state. They really help the current students to see the value of the course content.

Joe,
Good strategy to start the class. How do you do this with your students?
Gary

I agree who else better than a former student that has been in ther shoes, met the goal and applying their skills!
I try to make them remember why they walked into the door in the first place...
Greg,
I agree these stories are powerful. I like to bring in a graduate about mid-way in the course when the students are getting worn down and starting to lose interest. These graduates tell their stories and the motivation meter really start to read at the high side.

It can be helpful to share the success story of a former student, reinforcing how the skills learned at the school helped them succeed in their career. I find that the stories can have a greater impact if they are shared directly, from the successful student.
David,
This is a good way to approach the learning of your students. You are helping to instill a love of learning in them that will go well beyond the classroom.

I always try to balance my class with enough hard line information that keeps my students trying to seek out more, and a great deal of compassion for when they are having a hard time grasping the concepts of the lesson.
Jerry,
Learning is a personal thing and students need to see that it is up to them to learn. We can help and support them but we cannot learn for them. They need to have buy in if they are going to benefit from being in school.

student smust see the objective as a personal opportunity for success. They must have the "want to" in place
Paul,
Students love hearing stories about their career fields. So by telling them you are showing them how the content you are teaching is of value to them and their career pathways.

I find it helpfull in retaining students to keep them interested and motivated by daily sharing career stories that show what they are learning will help them someday in thier own career . PAUL C
Ruben,
If they have quit school it is for sure we have lost our influence so we need to do what we can to support students staying in school. If they do leave we need to let them know the door is open for their return once they are ready to focus on being students again.

Keeping a student in class, more importantly in school is vital to their success. We should make this our main priority as an instructor. I understand this could be the main reason in shaping a students life. ruben
