retention

It's about the professor to try and retain the students. If he or she does all they can, than it's up to the student

Deborah,
Let me know how it works for you.

Thank you Dr Meers, I will try that exercise with my next class.

Deborah,
You might want to develop some guided questions for the students to use in small groups for discussion and then have them bring one of the group discussion questions to the entire class for discussion. This way you are getting the right questions asked so you can answer them and share the information that is needed with the students.

I to have found that any number of students believe that just showing up for class is enough. I am having a difficult time getting the students to ask appropriate questions about the material being discussed.

Devon,
Learning is a two way street and you make a good point about that. The students need to know their participation is required. Passive learners don't retain very much content nor do they see application or relevancy to what they are learning.

Yes, I agree students should interact with the instructor, a lot of students just think showing up in class is enough. Students need to indicate their needs if they need additional help or explanations/demonstrations.

Students need to feel like they can rely & talk to the instructor, and know that in turn their issues will be acknowledged
