I am a big fan of using guest speakers in classes. I use people from the field as well as successful graduates. When these folks come in the students really perk up because they hear about what it takes to be successful while seeing how the content being taught can be applied. A win win for everyone.

Keeping students motivated to finish the goal they started will help student retention. One motivating factor I have seen that helps is having a guest speaker from a potential place of employment come in to speak about their company or about the duties of the student’s potential position. This allows students to see how reachable their goal is and is an effective motivating retention strategy.
