Getting to know you
I like to play games that involve the students One such game is 1 lie and 3 truths. Students are partnered up by twos and they are instructed to tell to their partner 1 lie and 3 truths. Their partner, in a group setting, introduces them and tells the truths and lie and it is up to the rest of the group to determine the lie
I also used this game for my first day of class. Its a fun and easy way to get students to introduce themselves and get to know something about the others. I also involved myself in the game so the students could get to know me and maybe see me as one of them
Debbie,
You are teaching in a great setting because of your low enrollment. You can develop rapport with your students in a way that enables you to provide targeted support as it is needed. You are being a resource to the career development of your students.

That does sound like an interesting game. As of late I've been fortunate to have small classes with students in the same program who already know each other before entering the class. During setup on the first day I found it valuable to carefully listen to their general conversation and start the day by joining in at an opportune time. By the second week before and after class chat as well as during breaks becomes the norm and allows students a chance to express both hopes and concerns about the course in a more relaxed manner.
Jeffery,
This is a fun game and a great way to help students get settled into a a new class. In addition, sharing facts about their lives and some laughs help to create a learning community.
