Enthusiasm goes a very long way in creating interest for the course!
Think back to that instructor that we have all experienced, lecturing with their eyes closed. Are you giving the students the impression that everything is repetition for you, or that you really care? One of the biggest success strategies for showing energy is seeking opportunities that you, as the instructor, can learn from the experience. Demonstrating the desire to continue learning is a great way to show enthusiasm for the topic and experience.
Hi Monica,
I like your excitement. I am sure you are both a good instructor and model for your culinary students.
Gary
Hi Frederick,
So true and so important. If we aren't excited about being there and getting the opportunity to teach it is for sure the students won't be either.
Gary
I love to cook, so teaching at a culinary school is awesome. I love to involve my restaurant experiences to the class lecture. I show my students that they are many way to create a dish but the best thing about beind a chef its to be creative and to experiments with all the wonderful ingredients and create something new and delicious.
Instructor enthusiam is very important in student retention. An enthusiastic instructor will have multiple ways of presentiong the information to student. Also, the enthusiatic instructor will have more interaction with student which can make learning and retention a lot easier for students
If the instructor is enthusiastic about the subject matter, it reflects how much the instructor loves what he/she does. Students get more energetic when they see a positive environment and one that allows them to share their experiences as well as knowledge acquired in their life outside of the class room. In doing so they can appreciate and realize that they can be happy in the career they are pursuing.
When I have had an enthusiastic instructor it has made me look forward to coming to class and prepared me to learn the material even if the material wasn't the most interesting. As an instuctor, I believe we have the ability to engage our students in the learning process by setting the stage and being excited about what we are teaching which will be contagious for the students.
The students really get into the class when they see how much I love what I do. Enthusiasm is contagious. They are more energized during class and attendance is always up. The students feel that they can be happy in their chosen career when they see that I am too.
Enthusiasm is contageous! Hopefully if I show a true passion for the course I'm covering, it will ignite a passion within my students to master that material.
Instructor enthusiasm correlates to student attention and subject retention. If the instructor is engaging, dynamic, and passionate about their subject, students will recipricate with their attention. Thanks
Enthusiasm creates a positive vibe that spreads like wild fire. When a student sees his instructor enthusiastic, energetic and upbeat about the course he ultimately gets caught into that web and wants to be part of it. Also, the instructor needs to emphasize the importance of being positive and enthusiastic in certain fields like medical fields where it would impact their clients(patients) in a positive manner.
Hi Stacy,
Good point about how enthusiasm reflects on teaching success. We have to bring it to the classroom if we expect our students to be excited.
Gary
Classes where instructors are enthusiastic about the material often have great student retention. Students often talk about these instructors and what the learn outside of class too. It stays with them after the class is over as well. The students usually put very positive comments about how these instructors motivate them and drive them to want to learn more about the subject and the field.
Hi JH,
Right you are. We get excited because others are excited. So we need to bring enthusiasm to the class each time it meets.
Gary
Rebecca is right! Enthusiasm energizes an environment and eveybody benefits.
The shortest and most basic answer is that enthusiasm is contageous. If I am enthusiastic about my course and about your participation in it, then you'll have to work at resisting my enthusiasm
They can feel if an instructor is excited about their subject.
Students are savy. They feed off of an instructors enthusiasm or lack of one. We are the most influencial person in their educational careers.
Hi Gary,
I agree with you on this assessment of the value of instructor enthusiasm in relation to student success. "Knowing your instructor is supportive of your efforts and is their to help you can really make a difference in your learning."
