I read and constantly research my materials so I always have something new to introduce to the students. The results I am looking for are when students comeback to tell me how it helped them latter. The students do not always understand the importance of the topics your introducing them to at the time of the class.

DR Jackson, we (the team of instructors) often get positive feedback from former students. This feedback reinforces our intrinsic motivation, it really gives the team a sence making a positive difference.

Sean , your intrinsic motivation really provides an incredible reality to the work we do as instructors. At times, the training we provide can be the difference between life and death. Do you hear back from students that have graduated years earlier that share their experiences and how your training prepared them for difficult decisions? Thanks for anything you can share.

Intrinsic: I teach operational level planning to military students and I know if I do my job to the best of my ability the students will become excellent military planners and in the end this saves American blood and treasure.

Extrinsic: Receiving high marks from the students instrcutor critique form.

Nadezhda, great post and provides a great commentary on another important topic of the importance of general education subjects such as writing to the overall curriculum. One technique that has been used with great success is to have guest speakers come into the classroom within an area of profession that is of interest to the students and have them discuss why they feel such general education topics are important within their profession. Students tend to react such sessions in a positive manner.

What motivates me intrinsically? I want to give my students the most useful information and educational experiences that are based upon best practices so they may also carry those into their future teaching careers.

What motivates me extrinsically? Being able to observe my current students in the field using the tools and educational techniques they have learned, designed, and practiced in my classes.

Students often come to my class wondering why they should take English Composition course. They often do not connect their future career goals with having good writing skills. My goal is to develop my students' intrinsic motivation by showing the importance of my discipline for their college and professional writing.

In return, it is my intrinsic motivation to see the improvement in my students' writing skills as an essential component of their professional growth. My extrinsic motivation develops from the course evaluations I receive from my students and my employer's expectations of my performance as the instructor and the member of the faculty.

Crystal, students can easily tell when their instructor is passionate about the subject matter and about them and their success. Good to see these are traits that are deeply imbedded within you as a person and will greatly assist in your relationship building with your students.

Intrinsically- I honestly love the subject matter I teach and feel very passionate about it

Extrinsically- When students give me positive feedback or let me know when I have inspired them, it makes me feel accomplished

I am Intrinsically motivated to be the best instructor I can be -
not by money - but by the passion of sharing and teaching my art with others

The success of my students is the big intrinsic motivating factor for me. I'm relatively new to this and the dawning comprehension on their faces would be the extrinsic factor and also is very exciting!

I like the fact that I am providing tools to help enhance the learning ability of others. It shows that I care about their sucess and their abilty to possible pass on what they have learned to others. Knowing that I have some control in the destiny of others is a great motivator.

Sole, mimicry is the most flattering form of acceptance and praise we as instructors can receive in both our peers and our students. This is why leading by example is just as important in education as it is in business.

Caren, the passionate instructors tend to be the ones experiencing increases in their paychecks. Looks like your intrinsic and extrinsic motivators go hand in hand. : - )

Kimberly, there are no boring subjects just boring presentations but I understand your statement. Keeping students engaged is as much an art form as it is a science. Students that find themselves engaged and invested in the subject matter tend to perform higher on assessments and their ability to demonstrate subject mastery.

LindaRae, hearing back from the employers and from students is a great affirmation of our efforts as instructors. Thanks for sharing.

Ronald I agree but I also want to teach the best I can and please the students that are paying for my time. I really have learned much from the topic.

I try to prepare my classes and combine them with current events, sometimes TV commercials, base on the subject. Normally students respond and get interested even more (Intrinsic) It becomes a challenge to find something online that is related to that particular lecture and makes the lecture/participation moment fun… Extrinsic motivators is when your supervisors, peers and students make positive comments about what you do and sometimes even “copy that”…

Intrinsic--to see the interest and curiosity of my students in action in the lab and classroom, the veriety of questions asked and the pride of accomplishment.

Extrinsically-- seeing the confidence in their face and actions, knowing that I played a roll in making their lives better financialy and job security. getting a phone call from students graduated and hearing the excitment in their voice of accomplishments and they are happy.

Thats my reward, I PASSED THE TEST OF TRUST.

I love what I do. I find that my passion for all things food makes me a better instructor. Also I have found that I really enjoy having a piece in someone's puzzle. If I can help someone grow in their life then I have done my job. Extrinsically you can't beat a better paycheck!
