My intrinsic motivation to be effective in the classroom is to have the ability to bring a boring or non exciting subject to life for the students . My extrinsic motivation in the classroom is to be recognized for helping students achieve excellence in their classes.

Intrinsic - I enjoy the subjects I teach and keeping up to date on current practice/techniques/medications help me to motivate my students
Extrinsic - Feedback from my students on how usefull their education is in obtaining employment. Hearing back from physicians on how well prepared my students are for their employment.

Joni, well stated. Really drives the issues home when you consider you will be the recipient of your student's acquired skills at some point in time. Very humbling experience.

Robert, I know of no greater reward than recognition by my fellow instructors and the praise of my students. No amount of money could ever replace these feelings. Thanks for sharing.

I can remember when I was a student and the experience of understanding a lecture or engaging in a class project gave me an enourmous sense of satisfaction and it motivated me to continue learning. I find that that sense of acomplishment and satisfaction extended beyond the classroom and into other areas of life and serves to build on itself. As a Psychology professor I understand how intrinsic/extrinsic motivation can affect positively as well as negatively in a student self perception. Understanding the depth of experience the student can achive is the primary "Intrinsic and Extrinsic motivation" for me as na instructor.

As the program coordinator, my intrinsic and extrinsic goals are to have each student pass the program, I think that is a short term goal, I have a mid term goal and that is to have each student pass their state boards, but my long range goal is that each student be the best nurse possible after all they will be taking care of me when I'm old and I want the best care available.

Dear Dr. Johnson,

I have always been motivated intrinsically by my love and desire to teach what I have spent 36 years studying and researching. My love of food has intrinsically driven me to be the best in the field and sharing my knowledge with others has been very rewarding.
Also, sharing life experiences in the food industry and sharing those career opportunities with students is a great motivator. Giving my students helpful feedback about there daily production in the classroom, and how it relates to future positions in the field of food, also drives my teaching skills and lesson plans to a new level of extrinsic motivation.
As a teacher I was just motivasted in my teaching abilities by receiving two awards at an In-service faculty meeting. Yhese awards were voted on by my fellow colleauges, and that has extrinsically motivated me to continue to be the best in my field of education.

Sincerely,
Robert Falite

Intrinsic, I try to learn something about each student that can be used as a key to explain why a concept would be important to them in the industry. Learning about a student gives an instructor an opportunity to teach material in a manner the student can identify with, also creating some security for them. Getting to know each student and maybe knowing about their goals in the industry is a great way to guide them or relate to their future.

Extrinsic goals can be both tangible and intangible. I utilize the power of food. Whether is be a small reward for an individual or a larger reward such as donuts for breakfast or ordering pizza for a group or class, these seem to help keep them focused and striving to complete assigments with maximum effort.

This is an important aspect of learning and should be kept in mind by the instructor.

Intrinsic: Th at i can provide the information needed for the students to succeed with the class.

Extrinsic: That I am recognized by the students as someone to help them to learn and succeed.

Eurico, great topic and I agree 100%. Properly preparing for classes and knowing how current events impact your subject matter translates into students feeling respected and they are receiving value for their time and money they invest in their education.

To be intrinsically motivates to be effective in the classroom is be always prepared for subject matters you discuss for the day lectue or lad, make a nice discussion ,make it more interesting, classroom participation is an effective for learning. And for extrinsic open a topic that related to the topic of discussion in somehow they could think another source of learning patterns. This motivation must always be together all the time.

Miriam, what steps do you take to influence the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations of your students? Thanks for any information you can share.

James Jackson

The knowledge of the education in the course is my motivator intrinsically. I am always moved when I see students become more self assured and intrepid after takin my course.

Intrinsically, I am motivated to be an effective instructor because I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, with the hope that I can motivate my students to be lifelong learners.

Extrinsically, my motivation to excel is driven by changes in science and technology which constantly remind me that I better learn more and more about my field of study and instruction, before my personal knowledge and style of teaching is considered as passé.

Charlin, the intrinsic shines through even when you are not on your "A" game while the extrinsic may seem superficial if you are not genuine in your desire to see students succeed. Do you ever discuss intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation with your students? Thanks for anything you can share.

James Jackson

Jessica, well done incorporating your experience as a student to your students. Such a relationship will help your students relate to you and see that they are just like you and need to be dedicated like you. Thanks for sharing.

I am intrinsicly motivated by my desire to share my passion for what I teach and share the Knowledge I have aquired through my years of experience. I think that leads to the extrinsic, because it is fulfilling to see student encouraged and thier intrests nurtured.

Do to the fact that I am a Instructor and also a student, I feel that I can relate to the students in terms of their intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. I know as a students starting a class I want to successfully complete tasks of the class, so I apply this to my teaching style, and help build up my students with recognition and encouraging them. This also builds security in learning and their ability to gain self-esteem.

Intrinsically - I try to promote clinical thinking for each student as I believe that these exercises allow for students to internalize the information and apply their own thoughts in the process allowing for a learning based atmosphere. I do not want to promote memorization to achieve their goals because after graduation that type of learning will have the student short of their future goal of a new career. Applied knowledge is always key in a competative job market. Just having a piece of paper is not enouph. Extrinsically I take students on field trips and have guest speakers in to let them experience all of the potential future outcomes that they can take their future career in.
